LATERAL PROPULSION SYSTEMS AND ARCHITECTURES FOR HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOONS
Aspects of the technology relate to propulsion systems for high altitude, long duration balloons, such as balloons that operate in the stratosphere for weeks, months or longer. A propeller assembly is used to provide lateral directional adjustments, which allows the balloon to spend more time over a desired region, reduce the return time to the desired region, reduce fleet overprovisioning, and increases the safety case by additional controls and avoidance abilities. A control assembly manages operation of the propeller assembly, including setting the pointing direction, speed of rotation and determining when to turn on the propeller and for how long. The propulsion system including the control and propeller assemblies is rotatable around a connection member of the balloon. Such rotation is independently adjustable from any rotation of the balloon's payload. The propeller blades may be made of plastic, which reduces weight and cost while providing sufficient speed at stratospheric altitudes.

Hybrid VTOL vehicle
A hybrid VTOL vehicle having an envelope configured to provide hydrostatic buoyancy, a fuselage attached to the envelope and having at least one pair of wings extending from opposing sides thereof to produce dynamic lift through movement, and a thrust generation device on each wing and configured to rotate with each wing about an axis that is lateral to a longitudinal axis of the envelope to provide vertical takeoff or landing capabilities. Ideally, the envelope provides negative hydrostatic lift to enhance low-speed and on-the-ground stability. A vehicle comprising a first lift device capable of providing hydrostatic lift; a second lift device capable of providing dynamic lift through movement; and a system structured to generate thrust coupled to the second lift device, the second lift device and the thrust generation system capable of rotating together about an axis that is lateral to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle at angles at least in the range of 90 degrees to and including 180 degrees.

Hexakis icosahedron frame-skin vacuum lighter than air vehicle
A vacuum lighter than air vehicle (VLTAV) includes a rigid frame of rods connected together to form a hexakis icosahedron. A membrane skin covers the rigid frame and defines therewith a vessel configured to hold an internal vacuum that allows the vessel to float in the air. The plurality of rods and membrane skin have weights and dimensions that result in a neutral and/or positive buoyancy for the vessel while preventing geometric instability.

HINGED BLIMP
A hinged blimp system is disclosed. A hinged blimp system includes a vectored thrust engine, which may or may not be implemented as part of a remotely piloted airship vehicle (RPAV) subsystem that is coupled to a ground-based subsystem. The vectored thrust engine includes a vectored thrust frame coupled to a support structure that is, in turn operationally connected to a balloon envelope. The vectored thrust frame is coupled to the support structure via a hinge, or knuckle, with a pitch axle and a roll axle.
HINGED BLIMP
A hinged blimp system is disclosed. A hinged blimp system includes a vectored thrust engine, which may or may not be implemented as part of a remotely piloted airship vehicle (RPAV) subsystem that is coupled to a ground-based subsystem. The vectored thrust engine includes a vectored thrust frame coupled to a support structure that is, in turn operationally connected to a balloon envelope. The vectored thrust frame is coupled to the support structure via a hinge, or knuckle, with a pitch axle and a roll axle.
