FOOD PRESERVATION WITH SILVER-BIOMASS

A food preservation system can include a gas (e.g., oxygen) permeable package having at least one oxygen permeable member defining a package chamber therein, and a silverized biomass in the package chamber of the oxygen permeable package. Another food preservation system can include a container having an internal chamber, and an oxygen permeable divider located in the internal chamber so as to divide the internal chamber into a first chamber and a second chamber. The first chamber can being configured for receiving food therein, and a silverized biomass is located in the second chamber. A method of preserving food can include retaining a food in a container that includes silverized biomass such that the food does not contact the silverized biomass. The silverized biomass can have a combination of silver and biomass.

Embodiments of the invention provide a packaging tray for use in packaging items, the tray having a first region having a cross-section which defines a concave surface having one or more cross-sections suitable to receive an item and a second region having a cross-section which is substantially straight. Embodiments provide a process in which tray may be loaded by depositing kiwi fruit and then agitated to settle and align the kiwifruit in the concave sections assisted with the straight sections providing space for movement of the kiwifruit laterally to the concave sections and directing the kiwifruit of the agitated tray towards the concave section. The tray is wrapped after the items are deposited and the wrapped tray is loaded into a box with settled items and loads the wrapped tray into a box.

A method of preserving a harvested cultivated food can include applying a preservative composition onto a cultivated food. The preservative composition can include an amino acid, peptide having the amino acid or protein having the amino acid. The amino acid or peptide or protein having the amino acid can be associated with a water soluble substance. The water soluble substance may facilitate application of the amino acid to the cultivated food and may contribute to the improvement of preservation of the cultivated food post-harvest. A container can be configured for protecting harvested cultivated food by having a chamber with a preservative composition located the container. A substrate can include a preservative composition located on the substrate, which can be applied to a cultivated food to increase preservation.

Method and apparatus for packaging respiring produce

A method of manufacturing a modified atmosphere package is provided which comprises the steps of: providing a portion of packaging material; providing a portion of produce; forming, from the portion of packaging material and the portion of produce, a closed package defining a package volume and containing in the package volume the portion of produce and a modified atmosphere. The modified atmosphere is modified with respect to the ambient atmosphere. The method comprises providing the modified atmosphere in the package volume by providing a gas mixture of at least one atmosphere modification gas and pressurised air in the package volume. An associated apparatus is also provided.
