A single-unit restraining system for exercising control over a subject is provided. The restraining system comprises an attachment element adapted to be removably attached around a subject and encasing a retraction mechanism configured to extend and retract a tether element. The retraction mechanism comprises a multi-spool configuration which allows spooling or coiling of the tether element into the attachment element without requiring the tether element to complete 360-degree revolutions around a vertical axis. Tension forces associated with spooling the tether element are reduced and potential harm to the subject is reduced. The restraining system is configured to detach from the subject upon detecting tension forces exceeding a threshold amount.

The second housing may be configured to be connected to a second collar. The cord member may be connected between the first housing and the second housing. Apparatus to enable an elongate leash to coil, when not in use, around an animal's neck while attached to the animal's collar includes retainers each including a polarized magnet and first and second parts that have an at least partly separated state that enables placement of the leash between the parts at any one of a plurality of different, user-selectable locations along a length of the leash and an engaged state in which the parts are fixed to the leash at a user-selected location along the length of the leash. The invention relates to a winding device for an animal leash (1), in particular for a dog leash, comprising a housing (1) which houses the leash (3) and has a pull-out limiting device and a retaining ring (4) having an engagement opening (5), said retaining ring (4) having a pivot arm (4a) which is connected to the retaining ring (4) by means a pivot joint (6), closes the engagement opening (5) of the retaining ring (4) in its non-pivoted position and releases the engagement opening (5) of the retaining ring (4) in its pivoted position. In order to be able to use such a winding device in a simple manner to secure a dog in a motor vehicle in compliance with safety regulations, according to the invention, a lock tongue (11) is arranged at the pivot arm (4a) at its end facing away from the pivot joint (6) or at the retaining ring (4) at its end facing the pivot arm (4a), which tongue (11) can be inserted into a motor vehicle belt buckle when the retaining ring (4) is open.
