Foldable packaging container

A foldable packaging which may include a liquid-resistant paperboard form that is foldable to provide an attractive stackable container that resists water leakage, can be assembled without fastening hardware and has concealed gussets. The packaging can be folded into overlapping flaps and wings which are folded and interlocked to define a generally trapezoidal packaging which can receive a variety of different pot sizes and types. The die cut pattern forming the packaging can be of a universal shape but formed in a variety of different sizes to accommodate different sized potted plants.

A blank for forming a carton includes a unitary substrate layer defining a primary axis and a secondary axis transverse to the primary axis. The substrate layer includes: a main panel having a side edge extending substantially parallel to the primary axis and an end edge substantially parallel to the secondary axis; an end outer panel connected to the end edge by a first fold line extending substantially parallel to the secondary axis; an end inner panel connected to the end outer panel by a second fold line extending substantially parallel to the secondary axis; a side outer panel connected to the side edge by a third fold line extending substantially parallel to the primary axis; a side inner panel connected to the side outer panel by a fourth fold line extending substantially parallel to the primary axis; a notch defined in a side edge of the end inner panel; and an integral tab extending from an end edge of the side inner panel adjacent the side edge of the end inner panel. The blank is configured to be erected into a carton by: folding the end outer panel relative to the main panel about the first fold line; folding the end inner panel relative to the end outer panel about the second fold line so that the end inner panel substantially faces the end outer panel and is deflectably spaced away from the end outer panel; folding the side outer panel relative to the main panel about the third fold line so that the side inner panel substantially faces the side outer panel, whereby a pocket is defined between the notch, the side outer panel, and the end outer panel; folding the side inner panel relative to the side outer panel about the fourth fold line so that the side inner panel substantially faces the side outer panel; and inserting the tab into the pocket to interlock the side inner panel and the end inner panel.

An apparatus and method utilizes a forming machine which includes a mandrel and forming plate each shaped to conform the paperboard and/or corrugated material blank passing through the mandrel into the desired configuration for a leak-proof tray. The blank includes a layer of a suitable paperboard and/or corrugated material, and a layer of leak-proof plastic or paper material disposed over one side of the corrugated material. The corrugated material includes cutouts at each corner of the blank that enable the sides and ends of the blank to be folded relative to one another. The paper material continuously overlaps the surface of the corrugated layer and these cutouts to provide a continuous leak-proof barrier layer within the formed tray and at the corners of the blank when folded to form the tray, as the paper material is folded over itself to form a bellows corner in the tray.

A carton made of a paper material having a protective layer formed on a surface thereof. The carton has a box and a lid being swingable relative to the box. The lid has a first front sheet and a second front sheet being foldable relatively and two first side sheets and two second side sheets being foldable relatively. The lid has a double-layered structure to improve its structural strength, and an interior side of the lid is also protected by the protective layer. The carton of the present invention has enhanced structural strength and better damp-proofing effect to preserve objects contained therein.
