The guide includes a supported portion supported pivotably by the apparatus body and an abutted portion configured to be abutted against the abutting portion. The guide is configured to move in interrelation with an operation of closing the opening/closing member and to be positioned inside the apparatus body with respect to the opening/closing member in the closed state of the opening/closing member. In the opened state of the opening/closing member, the guide is configured to be restricted from pivoting by the abutted portion being abutted against the abutting portion.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes a sheet supporting portion configured to support a sheet, a feeding member configured to contact an upper surface of the sheet supported on the sheet supporting portion and feed the sheet, a drive motor configured to rotate in a first direction and in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and a lifting mechanism connected to the drive motor and configured to lift the sheet supporting portion and lower the feeding member in a case where the drive motor rotates in the first direction, and to lower the sheet supporting portion and lift the feeding member in a case where the drive motor rotates in the second direction.

In a case where a skew of a document being conveyed is detected by a detection unit, an image reading apparatus notifies that documents having different sheet widths may be included in documents stacked on a stacking unit.

A medium-transporting device includes: a medium-mounting section on which a medium is mounted; a feeding unit that includes a feeding roller and that is configured to be displaced between a contact posture and a separation posture; a first restricting member that is provided downstream of the feeding roller in the transport direction and that is configured to switch between a restriction posture in which the first restricting member restricts movement of the medium and a retreat posture in which the first restricting member permits the movement of the medium; a first motor configured to generate power for rotating the feeding roller; and a second motor configured to generate power for switching a posture of the first restricting member, in which an operation of rotating the feeding roller and an operation of switching the first restricting member from the restriction posture to the retreat posture are performed in parallel.

There is provided a sheet feeding apparatus for feeding a sheet. The sheet feeding apparatus includes: a feeding roller that feeds a sheet; and a moving mechanism that moves the feeding roller to a feeding position where the feeding roller contacts the sheet, to a first retracting position where the feeding roller is separated from the sheet, and to a second retracting position lying between the feeding position and the first retracting position.

A sheet conveying apparatus includes a transmitting mechanism-, a movable member, and a control portion to input a signal having first and second levels. The transmitting mechanism transmits driving force and includes a spring clutch and an electromagnetic clutch. The driving force pivotally moves the movable member. The spring clutch idles by a slackness of a spring when the rotation in a second direction is inputted to the transmitting mechanism and the movable member is regulated from pivoting at a predetermined position. The control portion inputs the signal to the transmitting mechanism such that the state electromagnetic clutch state changes the engagement state to the disengagement state through an intermediary state gradually varying a length of time where the signal of the first level is inputted into the electromagnetic clutch after the movable member reaches the predetermined position by inputting the rotation in the second direction to the transmitting mechanism.

A document feed device includes a tray in which a document is loaded, a pickup roller to be moved upward or downward to a standby position spaced apart from the document or to a pickup position to pick up the document in the tray, a separator to separate each sheet of the picked-up document, an inclined guide to connect an end of an exit of the tray to an entrance of the separator and to guide a bottom surface of the picked-up document, and a document guide member movable to a first position protruding from the inclined guide to guide the picked-up document or to a second position below the inclined guide.

The rotation of a lifting and lowering plate 56 is controlled such that, in a case where the height of the sheet loaded in a manual feed tray 50 is maximum, a feed roller 51 abuts the sheet at a first abutment position at a first moving velocity slower than a second moving velocity at a position upstream in the movement direction of the feed roller 51 from the first abutment position, and, in a case where the height of the sheet loaded in the manual feed tray 50 is minimum, the feed roller 51 abuts the sheet at a second abutment position at a third moving velocity slower than the first moving velocity at the first abutment position.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes an apparatus body, a sheet supporting portion configured to be movably supported between a sheet supporting position and a first storage position, and a sheet feed unit including a sheet feed portion, and an abutment member, the sheet feed unit being movably supported among a sheet feed position, a waiting position, and a second storage position. The sheet feed unit is positioned in the sheet feed position or the waiting position in a case where the sheet supporting portion is positioned in the sheet supporting position. The sheet feed unit is positioned in the second storage position in a case where the sheet supporting portion is positioned in the first storage position. The abutment member moves so as to be stored in the apparatus body in a case where the sheet feed unit moves from the waiting position to the second storage position.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes: a conveying roller; a separating roller which forms a nip portion by pressing the conveying roller and separates a sheet conveyed by the conveying roller one by one in the nip portion; a moving portion configured to move a stacking portion from a first position at which a sheet stacked in the stacking portion and a feeding roller are separated from each other to a second position at which the sheet stacked in the stacking portion abuts on the feeding roller; and a cover member which is movable between a third position to cover a rotation shaft of the separating roller and a fourth position to expose the rotation shaft of the separating roller, in which the cover member placed in the fourth position moves to the third position along with movement of the stacking portion from the first position to the second position.
