A machine to produce stacks of folded pop-up wipes from material that is threaded along a path having a direction through the machine. The machine includes a holder, a first tension unit, a perforation unit to generate perforations in the material in a direction orthogonal to the direction of the path, and a folding unit to fold the material in a direction orthogonal to the direction of the path. The material is threaded along a path through the machine via the first tension unit, the perforation unit and the folding unit. A control unit controls the machine to produce folded pop-up wipes by individually controlling tension of material along one or more sections of the path and to increase tension of the material in a section of the path located after the perforation unit to stretch a generated perforation in the section of the path by a target distance.

A size of the second clearance in a planar direction perpendicular to a surface of the sheet is wider than a size of the first clearance in the planar direction.

A device for joining several layers is placed in the guide path, such that it can join several or all of the stock sections combined in the first combining device into a bundle, before they are received by the second combining device and is associated with, are arranged downstream of the first combining device. During production of the products, a combined bundle is stapled before it is combined with one or more other bundles and is then transversely folded. In addition, a longitudinal cutting device is provided in the guide path downstream of the transverse folding device.

A folding or interfolding unit includes first and second folding or interfolding rolls to fold or interfold the sheets of paper according to a predetermined folding or interfolding configuration. The first and second folding or interfolding rolls include, respectively, a tubular body configured to rotate in a predetermined direction of rotation about a longitudinal rotation axis, and gripping groups, each of which includes a mechanical gripping member configured to move, at a gripping point, from an opening position to a closing position, which is arranged to mechanically hold the sheets up to a releasing point.
