Embodiments of the present invention relate to solvents for pesticides and pesticide formulations. In one aspect, a solvent for pesticides comprises (a) an ether ester of Formula 1: ##STR00001##
wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently one of an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an aryl group, wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl, and wherein n is 1 to 6; and (b) a polar amide of Formula 2:
R.sup.4—C(O)—NR.sup.5R.sup.6  (Formula 2)
wherein R.sup.4 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are each independently an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms.

Compounds of formula (I), wherein the substituents are as defined in claim 1, and the agrochemically acceptable salts, stereoisomers, enantiomers, tautomers and N-oxides of those compounds, can be used as insecticides.

Provided herein are screening methods for identifying compounds for use as repellents, e.g., as alternatives to DEET, and as pesticides. Further provided are one or more compounds identified using the screening methods described herein, and compositions containing such compounds.
