Flux-enhanced hierarchical porous membrane for oil-water nanoemulsion separation
Hierarchical porous membranes suitable for use in oil/water separation processes are provided. The membranes described herein are particularly well suited for separating trace amounts of water (e.g., no greater than 3 wt % water content, no greater than 1 wt % water content, or 50-1000 ppm water) from oil in droplets less than 1 um in size. The membranes have a wide range of applications, including deep seep oil exploration, oil purification, and oil spill cleanup.
POROUS MEMBRANE AND MEMBRANE SUPPORT WITH INTEGRATED HIGH PERMEABILITY BARRIER
A membrane can contain at least one substrate layer, wherein the substrate layer includes a plurality of substrate pores, and each of the substrate pores contains a plurality of nanotubes or nanowires positioned within the substrate pore. Such membranes can be incorporated into enclosures for various substances. The enclosures can be exposed to an environment, such as a biological environment (in vivo or in vitro), where the membrane can delay or not provoke an immune response from the environment. One or more substances within the enclosure can be released into the environment, one or more selected substances from the environment can enter the enclosure, one or more selected substances from the environment can be prevented from entering the enclosure, one or more selected substances can be retained within the enclosure, or combinations thereof. The enclosure can, for example, allow a sense-response paradigm to be realized.
MEMBRANE FILTER
A membrane filter including a thin film having a nanometer order thickness as a base, which is easy to increase in size, and which has sufficient strength. The membrane filter is formed by laminating a thin film having a thickness of 1 to 1,000 nm with a support film which is a porous film having a thickness of 1 to 1,000 ?m, which is made of a photosensitive composition or a cured product of the photosensitive composition, and has a plurality of hole portions penetrating in the thickness direction.
POLYMER MEMBRANES HAVING OPEN THROUGH HOLES, AND METHOD OF FABRICATION THEREOF
Described are various embodiments of a method for fabricating a polymer membrane having open through holes, and membranes so produced. In some embodiments, a curable polymeric resin is introduced within a micro post structure wherein a material of the micro posts is soluble in a solvent and wherein the curable polymeric resin is insoluble in this solvent such that the structure can be at least partially dissolved to release the membrane once cured.
Fabrication of free standing membranes and use thereof for synthesis of nanoparticle patterns
The present disclosure discloses a method of fabrication of free standing open pore membranes with uniform pore size and shape and ordered pore distribution, and its use for synthesis of nanoparticle patterns. The method includes applying a photoresist layer to the top surface of a substrate, heating the photoresist layer for a period of time, and exposing the photoresist layer to a dose of ultraviolet radiation through a mask having a predetermined pattern. The dose of ultraviolet radiation is controlled in intensity and time and the photoresist layer is exposed such that a top portion of the photoresist layer through which the dose of ultraviolet radiation enters the photoresist layer undergoes greater cross linking than a bottom portion of the photoresist layer immediately adjacent to the top surface of the substrate such that a cross linking gradient develops through a thickness of the photoresist layer. The mask is removed and the membrane is readily detached from the top surface of the substrate since the portion of the membrane adjacent to the top surface is less cross linked than the top surface of the membrane. The detached membrane forms a free standing patterned membrane having a preselected pattern of open pores. The method can be used with positive photoresist materials as well when deposited on a UV transparent substrate so that the photoresist can be exposed to UV from its top with photomask and UV exposure from its back of the transparent substrate without the photomask.
NANO WIRE MICROPOROUS STRUCTURE
A microporous structure includes an array of nano wires and a coating about the nano wires of the array. The coating defines pores between the nano wires.
ULTRA-BREATHABLE AND PROTECTIVE MEMBRANES WITH SUB-5 NM CARBON NANOTUBE PORES
In one embodiment, a product includes a plurality of carbon nanotubes and a fill material in interstitial spaces between the carbon nanotubes for limiting or preventing fluidic transfer between opposite sides of the product except through interiors of the carbon nanotubes. Moreover, the longitudinal axes of the carbon nanotubes are substantially parallel, where an average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes is about 20 nanometers or less. In addition, the ends of the carbon nanotubes are open and the fill material is impermeable or having an average porosity that is less than the average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes.
RESIN FILM
A resin film has through holes formed to extend through the thickness of the resin film. The through holes are pillar-shaped. An average density of the through holes is 1?10.sup.6 to 1?10.sup.12 holes/cm.sup.2. An average diameter of the through holes is 1 to 310 nm. A degree of variability of the diameter of the through holes is 30% or less, the degree of variability of the diameter of the through holes obtained by dividing a standard deviation of the diameter of the through holes by the average diameter of the through holes and multiplying the resulting value by 100.
MEMBRANE SURFACE HYDROPHOBICITY THROUGH ELECTRO-HYDRODYNAMIC FILM PATTERNING
A roll-to-roll system for forming a hydrophobic polymer membrane surface includes a heated carrier belt, a repository of polymer material arranged to deposit the polymer material onto the carrier to create a heated polymer, an electrode belt positioned opposite the carrier belt, an electric field generator positioned to generate an electric field between the carrier belt and the electrode belt and to infuse a pattern into the heated polymer to form a patterned polymer film, and a solvent bath to rinse the patterned polymer film. A method of creating a hydrophobic polymer membrane surface includes depositing a polymer material onto a heated carrier, using the carrier, transporting the polymer material past an electrode that acts as an electric field generator, generating an electric field adjacent the carrier, using the electric field to infuse a pattern into the polymer membrane surface, and setting the pattern into the polymer membrane surface.
