Fennel oil or its principle component, trans-anethole, is encapsulated into non-viable yeast cells for larvicide application. Mosquito larvae are especially sensitive to this larvicide, even more so than previously described yeast-encapsulated essential oils. The larvicide is cost-effective and non-toxic to humans throughout manufacturing, storage, and application.

Natural product formulations with improved residual insect repellent/deterrent activity

Natural products were screened for their insect repellent activity, and carrot seed essential oil gave very high activity in biting repellent/deterrent bioassays. Analysis of the oil revealed the presence of 47 compounds, mainly mono- and sesqui-terpenes. The sesquiterpene, carotol, constituted more than 75% w/w of the oil. In the initial screening, the essential oil gave high biting deterrent activity and high repellent activity comparable to DEET against both Aedes aegypti and Anophies quadrimaculatus species of mosquitoes. The active fraction mainly comprises pure carotol. The essential oil and the pure compound have a potential to be developed and used as effective repellent against mosquitoes.

A method for producing a fermentate including the steps of obtaining a fruit or vegetable extract, treating the extract with a hydrolytic enzyme, mixing the extract with a fermenting microorganism, water, and a growth media to produce a liquid composition; and incubating the liquid composition at a controlled temperature and a controlled pH to produce a fermentate. A method for killing or inhibiting the growth of a contaminating microorganism on or within a food product, and a food product including a fermentate having a cellular mass component from a fermenting microorganism, a fermented fruit or vegetable extract and a hydrolytic enzyme are disclosed. A fermentate produced by any one of the methods described is contemplated. The fermentate may be a concentrated liquid or a dry powder and has the ability to inhibit the growth of a contaminating microorganism by 100% when diluted to less than 5% (w/v).
