A bait retaining device removably attachable to fishing bait includes a strip of material rigid enough to remain in an operative position but malleable enough to be disengaged by pulling. The strip is generally U-shaped, having legs joined by a base segment. Teeth to hold bait protrude from the side of each leg facing the other. The base segment of the U-shaped strip defines a hole through which the shaft of an anchor pin is inserted. The anchor pin is secured through the hole on one distal end by a head that cannot pass through the hole and allows the U-shaped strip to rotate freely. The other distal end of the anchor includes a loop for connection to the eyelet of a hook. A support piece, made of dense or buoyant material, is located between the legs and adjacent the base segment and may be removable and interchangeable.

Fishing jigs designed and configured to firmly hold natural worms during use. In some embodiments, a fishing jig includes a head, a shaft that tapers away from the head, and an impaler that pierces the entire thickness of the body wall of a worm. The cross-sectional size of the shaft proximate to the impaler is selected so that the body wall of the worm is taut when the worm is fully engaged with the fishing jig. In some embodiments, the impaler is angled toward the head of the fishing jig at an angle of 45? or less. In some embodiments, the fishing jig further includes a bumper on its bottom to assist with inhibiting a worm engaged with the fishing jig from catching on underwater objects.

The invention relates to a bait protector for bait fish that enables rapid adjustment of line position and bait shape without restringing the line or replacing hooks. The protective head comprises the line that runs through a plug that fits into any of several different holes in a front of the bait protector, such that using the several different holes changes the spin of the bait. To change holes, the plug is removed from its hole by sliding it along the line, the line is shifted to another hole along slots that connect the holes, and the plug is reinserted into the new hole without rerigging the bait. The bait protector includes a tuning wire that is inserted through the front and into the bait, and the tuning wire can be bent to shape the bait as desired.
