REMOVING METAL IONS WITH A MEMBRANE BASED ON ANIONIC POLYARYLENE ETHERSULFONE AND A CATIONIC POLYMER WITH AMINO GROUPS
The present invention relates to a method for removing metal ions from an aqueous system comprising a step of filtering the aqueous system through a loaded membrane which contains a carrier membrane based on a polyarylene ethersulfone which carries anionic groups, and a cationic polymer which is a polymer comprising primary and/or secondary amino groups. The invention further relates to a loaded membrane which contains a carrier membrane based on a polyarylene ethersulfone which carries anionic groups, and a cationic polymer which is a polymer comprising primary and/or secondary amino groups.
Chromatography Medium
The present invention provides a process for preparing a functionalised polymeric chromatography medium, which process comprises (I) providing two or more non-woven sheets stacked one on top of the other, each said sheet comprising one or more polymer nanofibres, (II) simultaneously heating and pressing the stack of sheets to fuse points of contact between the nanofibres of adjacent sheets, and (III) contacting the pressed and heated product with a reagent which functionalises the product of step (II) as a chromatography medium.

Grafted islands-in-the-sea nonwoven for high capacity ion exchange bioseparation
The invention provides polymer-grafted and functionalized nonwoven membranes adapted for use in bioseparation processes, the membranes including a nonwoven web of polyester fibers having an average fiber diameter of less than about 1.5 microns, each of the plurality of polyester fibers having grafted thereon a plurality of polymer segments constructed of a methacrylate polymer, each polymer segment carrying a functional group adapted for binding to a target molecule. The invention also provides a method of bioseparation comprising passing a solution comprising the target molecule, such as a protein, through the nonwoven membrane of the invention such that at least a portion of the target molecule in the solution binds to the nonwoven membrane. A method for preparing a polymer-grafted and functionalized nonwoven membrane adapted for use in bioseparation processes is also provided.

METHODS OF SEPARATING SUBSTANCES FROM FLUIDS
Disclosed are composite materials and methods of making them. The composite materials comprise a support member and a cross-linked gel, wherein the cross-linked gel is a polymer synthesized by thiol-ene or thiol-yne polymerization and cross-linking. The cross-linked gel may be functionalized by a thiol-ene or thiol-yne grafting reaction, either simultaneously with the polymerization or as the second step in a two-step procedure. The composite materials are useful as chromatographic separation media.
