Provided is an aqueous coating composition comprising a coating film-forming resin, a curing agent, a scaly pigment, an inorganic viscosity agent, a hydrophobic associative viscosity agent, and a dispersant, wherein the composition contains the inorganic viscosity agent in an amount of 1 to 7 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the total resin solid content of the coating film-forming resin and the curing agent, and the composition contains the hydrophobic associative viscosity agent in an amount of 1 to 15 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the total resin solid content of the coating film-forming resin and the curing agent.

Aqueous dispersions including multistage-prepared polymers of mixtures of olefinically unsaturated compounds are disclosed. The aqueous dispersions include at least one polyurethane containing olefinically unsaturated groups. Production and use of the aqueous dispersions, particularly in the field of automotive finishing, is disclosed. The disclosure further relates to an aqueous basecoat material including the multistage-prepared polymers, and also to a method for producing a multicoat paint system using the aqueous basecoat material.
Method for producing a multicoat paint system on plastics substrates
The present invention relates to a method for producing a multicoat paint system on a plastics substrate, in which a basecoat film or a plurality of directly successive basecoat films are produced on a plastics substrate, a clearcoat film is produced directly on the one basecoat film or on the topmost of the plurality of basecoat films, and subsequently the one or more basecoat films and the clearcoat film are jointly cured, this method being a method wherein at least one basecoat material used for the production of the basecoat films comprises at least one aqueous polyurethane-polyurea dispersion (PD) comprising polyurethane-polyurea particles, where the polyurethane-polyurea particles present in the dispersion (PD) comprise anionic groups and/or groups which can be converted into anionic groups, and have an average particle size of 40 to 2000 nm and also a gel fraction of at least 50%.
METHOD OF APPLYING COATING COMPOSITIONS TO A SUBSTRATE
This disclosure provides a method of applying a first coating composition and a second coating composition to a substrate. The method includes providing the substrate defining a first target area and a second target area which define a gap there between of less than about 2 mm; applying the first coating composition via a first high transfer efficiency applicator to the first target area at a wet film thickness of from about 5 to about 150 microns; and applying the second coating composition via a second high transfer efficiency applicator to the second target area at a wet film thickness of from about 5 to about 150 microns to form a continuous layer of a combination of the first and second coating compositions that extends across the gap and also extends across at least an additional portion of the substrate.
Adhesion promoter for solventborne clearcoat materials
The present invention relates to a solventborne clearcoat material which comprises at least one additive preparable by reacting at least one alpha,omega-hydroxy-functionalized oligoester which has an OH number of 30 to 160 mg KOH/g, a theoretical carbon-carbon double bond content of 1 to 2.5 mmol/g, a number-average molecular weight of 1000 to 3000 g/mol, and a weight-average molecular weight of 2800 to 10 000 g/mol, and at least one alkoxysilane which possesses an OH-reactive functional group, the sum of the weight percentage fractions of all additives of the invention being 0.5 to 10 wt %, based on the total amount of the solventborne clearcoat material. The present invention further relates to a process for producing multicoat paint systems, and to multicoat paint systems producible by means of said process. The invention further relates to the use of the above-identified additive in solventborne clearcoat materials for the purpose of improving adhesion.

In an embodiment, a waterborne base coat composition includes water, pigment(s) and resin solids consisting of about 60 to 100 wt. % of binder solids and 0 to about 40 wt. % of crosslinker solids, the binder solids consisting of about 1 to about 40 wt. % of a urethanized polyester/(meth)acryl copolymer hybrid binder having a hydroxyl number of about 30 to about 200 mg KOH/g and a carboxyl number of about 8 to 50 mg KOH/g, and about 60 to about 99 wt. % of one or more further binders, the sum of the respective wt. % in each case equaling 100 wt. %.
