Method for producing a multi-layered coating

Provided herein is a method for producing a multicoat paint system on a metallic substrate by producing a basecoat or a plurality of directly successive basecoats directly on a metallic substrate coated with a cured electrocoat system, producing a clearcoat directly on the one or the topmost of the plurality of basecoats, and subsequently jointly curing the one or the plurality of basecoats and the clearcoat, wherein at least one basecoat material used for producing the basecoats includes at least one aqueous dispersion which includes a polymer whose preparation includes successive radical emulsion polymerization of three mixtures of olefinically unsaturated monomers.

LAYERED BODY

A laminate containing a metallic base layer and a transparent colored layer formed on the metallic base layer. The metallic base layer contains an aluminum pigment, a light-scattering component, a surface adjusting agent, and a rheology control agent, the aluminum pigment being present in an amount of 15 to 70 parts by mass, on a solids basis; and the light-scattering component being present in an amount of 5 to 55 parts by mass, on a solids basis, based on 100 parts by mass of the metallic base layer. The transparent colored layer contains a resin component, a curing agent, and a color pigment, the color pigment being present in an amount of 0.5 to 10 parts by mass, based on 100 parts by mass of the resin solids content of the transparent colored layer.

A coating composition includes a flexible hyperbranched polyol preparable by (a) reacting a polyol comprising at least three hydroxyl groups with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having from 6 to 36 carbon atoms or an esterifiable derivative of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to form a hydroxyl-functional first intermediate product; (b) reacting the first intermediate product with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride to form a carboxylic acid-functional second intermediate product; and (c) reacting the second intermediate product with an epoxide-functional compound having one epoxide group to form the hyperbranched polyol. The coating composition may be cured to a coating layer having excellent flexibility.

Aqueous coating composition and method for forming a coating film

The objective of the present invention is to provide an aqueous coating composition which has excellent curability at low temperatures. The present invention provides an aqueous coating composition which contains an aqueous resin having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group (A), a water-dispersible blocked polyisocyanate compound (B), a hydrophilicized carbodiimide compound (C), and an aqueous polyurethane resin (D), wherein the aqueous resin having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group (A) has a hydroxyl value of 80 to 200 mgKOH/g and an acid value of 10 to 40 mgKOH/g in terms of resin solid content, the aqueous polyurethane resin (D) has a glass transition point (Tg) of 50 C. or less, and a cured film of the aqueous polyurethane resin (D) has an elongation at break of 400% or more at 20 C.

An anticorrosive coating includes a first curable liquid layer to the associated substrate, the first layer having a thickness of at least about 100 micrometers, wherein the first layer includes at least one polymer or at least one monomer, quasi-one-dimensional particles or quasi-two-dimensional particles, sacrificial metal particles, and a solvent, wherein a percolation threshold of the particles is not reached in the presence of the solvent, wherein the percolation threshold of the particles is reached when between about 1% and about 20% of the solvent evaporates, applying a second curable liquid layer having a thickness of at least 100 micrometers on the top of the first layer after the percolation threshold of the particles is reached and viscosity of the first layer increases more than 50%, and allowing the first layer and the second layer to cure simultaneously.

Carboxy-functional polyether-based reaction products and aqueous base coats containing the reaction products

A pigmented aqueous basecoat material is disclosed. The pigmented aqueous basecoat material includes a polyether-based reaction product which is preparable by a reaction of trimesic acid with at least one polyether of the general structural formula (I) ##STR00001##
R is a C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 alkylene radical and n is selected accordingly such that the at least one polyether possesses a number-average molecular weight of 500 to 5000 g/mol. The trimesic acid and the at least one polyether are used in the reaction in a molar ratio of 0.7/2.3 to 1.6/1.7 and the resulting reaction product possesses an acid number of 10 to 50 mg KOH/g.

METHOD FOR FORMING A MULTILAYER COATING FILM AND MULTILAYER COATING FILM

An object of the present invention is to provide a method for forming a multilayer coating film with excellent performance such as acid resistance, by using a coating composition which is completely different from conventional clear coating compositions and cheaper than conventional non-melamine curing type, acid/epoxy type, and isocyanate type clear coating compositions. A method for forming a multilayer coating film comprising a step (1) of applying a base coating composition and a step (2) of applying a clear coating composition on a coating film formed in the step (1), wherein the clear coating composition causes a curing reaction through a transesterification reaction between a hydroxyl group and an alkyl ester group.
