The first resin layer on the top side of the wood-based panel provided with the abrasion-resistant particles is not dried after application. The method also includes applying at least one second resin layer to the first, moist resin layer provided with the abrasion-resistant particles on the top side of the wood-based panel, and then drying the assembly of first resin layer and second resin layer on the top side of the wood-based panel in at least one drying apparatus.

The ETFE particles have an average particle size of 5.0 to 50 μm. The heat-resistant resin includes at least one selected from polyamide-imide resin, polyethersulfone resin, and polyimide resin. The ETFE particles and the heat-resistant resin have a solid content ratio by mass of 60:40 to 90:10. The nonionic surfactant includes a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether surfactant. One variation of a method for directly casting a thin layer onto a substrate includes: combining a prepolymer, a solvent, and a curing agent to define a viscous material; advancing a substrate from a roll across a surface continuously at a first speed; depositing the viscous material at a viscosity through a deposition head onto the substrate, the viscous material flowing laterally across the substrate to form a thin layer of substantially uniform thickness over the substrate over a period of time while the substrate advances along the surface; and, at a distance from the deposition head depositing the viscous material onto the substrate corresponding to a duration of time for the viscous material to flow laterally across the substrate, heating the viscous material to evaporate solvent and to induce reaction between the curing agent and the prepolymer to cure the viscous material to form a layer.

The invention relates to a tie-coat composition comprising one or more binder polymers obtainable by copolymerizing a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the one or more binder polymers comprising pendant curable alkoxysilyl functional groups of general formula (I) —X-L-Si(R.sup.1).sub.n(OR.sup.2).sub.(3-n) (I) wherein L is a hydrocarbon linker group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is a heteroatom other than a sulphur atom, n is 0, 1, or 2; R.sup.1 is an alkyl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is an alkyl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkylalkoxy radical with 2 to 20 carbon atoms, wherein in at least 5 mole % of the curable alkoxysilyl functional groups comprised in the one or more binder polymers the hydrocarbon linker group L is a methyldiyl group (L1) and in at least 5 mole % of the curable alkoxysilyl functional groups comprised in the one or more binder polymers the hydrocarbon linker group L is a hydrocarbon group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms (L2), wherein the tie-coat composition does not comprise a crosslinking agent. The invention further relates to a process for controlling aquatic fouling on a surface of a man-made object comprising applying such tie-coat composition and a topcoat composition, and to a substrate coated with a tie-coat layer deposited from such tie-coat composition and a topcoat layer.
