Wood-like coating method for substrate

A protective coating method of a material such as aromatic polyurethane substrates is effected through a process that promotes coating adhesion to the substrate while providing a wood-like aesthetic. Closed cells on the surface of the aromatic polyurethane are opened via sanding techniques to promote adhesion. Once a sufficient surface is achieved, the substrate is coated using spray techniques to protect the aromatic polyurethane from ultra-violet light exposure. The wood-like appearance is achieved through embossing a wood-grain on the deformable surface and subsequently filling the grain with a contrasting agent to highlight its appearance through a reverse-roll-coating technique. Abrasion properties are achieved through a final clear top coat that allows both the contrast agent and the top coat to fully cure.

SURFACE DECORATION STRUCTURE PROVIDED WITH SILVER MIRROR FILM LAYER AND METHOD FOR FORMING SAME

A surface decoration structure includes an undercoat film, a silver mirror film layer, and a topcoat film formed on a surface of a substrate. The silver mirror film layer includes a film of stacked nanometer-sized silver particles having surfaces coated with a polymer dispersing agent, and the topcoat film includes, as a solvent, at least one member selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic hydrocarbon compound, an aliphatic hydrocarbon compound solution including 10% by mass or less of an aromatic compound, and diisobutyl ketone. The undercoat film and/or the topcoat film may include a corrosion inhibitor. The silver mirror film layer may further include a corrosion inhibitor. The surface decoration structure includes the silver mirror film layer with improved luster and corrosion resistance.

SOL-GEL COATING COMPOSITIONS AND RELATED PROCESSES

An alkoxysilane is contacted with water and an inorganic acid to form a first composition. A zirconium alkoxide is contacted with an organic acid to form a second composition. One or more alkoxysilanes and an organic acid are contacted with a mixture of the first and second compositions to form a sol-gel composition, to which a photoinitiator is added. The sol-gel composition has a ratio of a number of moles of silicon to a number of moles of zirconium (n.sub.Si/n.sub.Zr) ranging from about 2 to about 10. The sol-gel composition is applied on a substrate (e.g., an aluminum alloy substrate) multiple times to form multiple sol-gel layers, and at least one of the sol-gel layers is cured by UV radiation. The multiple sol-gel layers are then thermally cured.

DECORATIVE BOARD AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING SAME

A decorative board in the present disclosure includes a primer layer, a concealing layer, a colorant layer and a topcoat layer containing ultraviolet-curable resin on a base material in this order. A method for manufacturing the decorative board in the present disclosure includes a stretching process, an irradiation process, and a separation process. The stretching process includes forming the primer layer, the concealing layer, and the colorant layer on the base material in this order; applying a ultraviolet-curable coating material containing ultraviolet-curable resin; placing a plastic film on the applied ultraviolet-curable coating material, placing a roller on the plastic film, and stretching the ultraviolet-curable coating material by rolling the roller. The irradiation process includes forming the topcoat layer by hardening the ultraviolet-curable coating material by ultraviolet ray irradiation. The separation process includes separating the plastic film after the irradiation.

CANDY COLOR PAINT AND REFINISHING METHOD

Candy color metallic paint finishes can be formed or repaired by applying to a substrate a colored liquid base coating composition containing a colored metal oxide-coated nontransparent silver dollar aluminum flake pigment and optional additional colored pigments or dyes dispersed in a first hardenable binder to form a reflective colored base layer that hides the primed substrate and has a sparkling metallic appearance. A colored liquid intermediate coating composition containing a colored pigment or dye dispersed in a second hardenable binder is applied to the base layer to form a colored intermediate layer that increases the color saturation of incident light reflected from the base layer. The intermediate layer can be overcoated with a liquid clearcoat composition. The completed finish can replicate an original equipment manufacturer multilayer candy color metallic finish, while providing ease of application, low sensitivity to layer thickness variation, and low mottle.
