Lid Seaming Apparatus with Small Angle Engagement

Disclosed is a lid seaming apparatus that uses a seam forming roller and a seam sealer roller that move in a direction that is substantially parallel or is preferably less than 10 degrees from a tangent line drawn through the intersection point of the seam forming roller and the seam sealer roller with a seaming chuck. A displacement between the seaming chuck and the seam sealer roller that is slightly less than the thickness of a sealed seam allows for a high degree of adjustment and the creation of forces that are sufficient to cause the seam to properly seal.

SEAMING DEVICE

Provided is a seaming device capable of easily adjusting clearances between a chuck unit (seaming chuck device) and first and second seaming rolls in a short period of time, easily changing a seaming cycle, and producing a seamed sample can at a normal operation speed. In the seaming device, a seaming unit (130) carries out seaming operation by seaming rolls (131), a driving source for the swinging shaft (132) of the seaming rolls (131) is configured to be capable of controlling the seaming operation independently, and the driving output shaft (137) of a driving source (158) and the swinging shaft (132) of the seaming rolls are coupled through a ball spline (140).

Can shell and double-seamed can end

A drawn aluminum can shell has a peripheral crown which is double-seamed with an end portion of an aluminum can body to provide a can end having a generally flat center panel connected by an inclined curved or straight panel wall to an inclined inner wall of an annular U-shaped countersink. The countersink has an outer wall which connects with an inclined lower wall portion of a chuck wall at a junction below the center panel, and the chuck wall has a curved or inclined upper wall portion which connects with an inner wall of the crown. The chuck wall also has an intermediate wall portion forming a break, and the inner bottom width of the countersink is less than the radial width of the panel wall. The inclined upper wall portion of the chuck wall extends at an angle greater than the angle of the inclined lower wall portion of the chuck wall.
