The invention relates to a cutting insert having a polygonal upper side. Cutting edges, which are alternately configured as roughing cutting edges and finishing cutting edges, are provided at the edges of the upper side. The finishing cutting edges define an incircle (K1) having a diameter that is enlarged in comparison to a nominal size of the cutting insert, and the roughing cutting edges define an incircle (K2) having a diameter that is reduced in comparison to the nominal size of the cutting insert. The invention further relates to a cutting tool having a tool body on which at least one such cutting insert is disposed.

To provide a cutting insert that is properly manufactured with ease of use. A cutting insert has a first end face, a second end face on the opposite side from the first end face, and a peripheral side surface that is parallel to a central axis connecting the center of the first end face and the center of the second end face and connects the first end face and the second end face. A first major cutting edge is formed on the outer edge of the first end face. A first flank facing the first major cutting edge is formed between the first major cutting edge and the peripheral side surface and has a negative clearance angle α with respect to the peripheral side surface. The peripheral side surface includes a first side surface facing the first flank. Between the first flank and the first side surface, a recess line is formed to extend along a virtual edge line where a virtual plane extending from the first flank and a virtual plane extending from the first side surface cross each other, and the recess line is formed with a notch on the virtual edge line.

A cutting insert for a cutting tool includes a cutting edge of PCBN or PCD formed in a corner region in a transition between a side surface and a chamfer formed in an upper side of the cutting insert. A chip breaker is formed in the chamfer inside of the cutting edge, extending between a lower chamfer portion and an upper chamfer portion. The chip breaker includes a chip breaker bottom connected to the lower chamfer portion and a chip breaker wall extending from the upper chamfer portion to the chip breaker bottom. An upper transition is formed between the upper chamfer portion and the chip breaker wall. As seen in a top view, the upper transition follows a smoothly curved path including a convex middle portion. As seen in cross-section, perpendicular to the cutting edge, the chip breaker wall and the chip breaker bottom form a smooth concave profile.

Drilling tool systems including a drilling body and a drilling inserts are disclosed. The drilling inserts include four indexable cutting edges. The four cutting edges may each comprise a plurality of cutting edge segments and a wiper edge. The plurality of cutting edge segments and the wiper edge are provided at distinct angles to provide effective chip breaking and a stronger cutting edge at the drilling insert corners. Furthermore, the side surfaces of the drilling inserts allow the drilling insert to be more stably supported in a pocket of the drilling body. The drilling inserts may be used in a peripheral pocket of a drilling body.

Method for turning a workpiece with a tool system

A tool system for machining includes a tool body that has a first end for connecting to a machine tool and a second end having an end face on which a seat for an interchangeable cutting insert is formed. The cutting insert has an underside formed as an abutment surface, a top side formed as a rake face, and an encircling side face formed as a flank, and a cutting edge is formed at a transition from the top side to the encircling side face. The cutting insert is arranged on the seat such that the top side extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the tool body and the cutting edge protrudes beyond the outer circumference of the end face of the tool body in a radial direction with respect to the longitudinal axis with two usable cutting corners and cutting-corner portions adjoining the latter on both sides.
