Disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining a depth of a feature (4) formed in an object (2), the feature (4) having been formed in the object (2) by a cutting tool (38). The apparatus comprises: a camera (42) configured to capture an image of the feature (4) and a portion of the object (2) proximate to the feature (4); and one or more processors operatively coupled to the camera (42) and configured to: detect, in the image, an edge (72) of the feature (4) between the feature (4) and a surface of the object (2); using the detected edge (72), calculate a diameter for a circle (74, 76, 78); acquire a point angle of the cutting tool (38); and, using the calculated diameter and the acquired point angle, calculate a depth value for the feature (4).

A tool shape measurement device includes: a contour detection unit that detects a tool contour from an image of a rotating tool that is taken; an axis direction calculation unit that calculates a tool axis direction that is an axis direction of the rotating tool on the basis of the tool contour; a tool diameter measurement unit that calculates an apparent tool diameter of the rotating tool on an imaging surface on the basis of a calibrated positional and postural relationship between an imaging device and the rotating tool, the tool axis direction, and the tool contour; and a tool diameter correction unit that calculates a distance between the imaging device and the rotating tool using the tool axis direction, and corrects the apparent tool diameter to an actual tool diameter by correcting distortion in the tool contour on the basis of the distance.

The device's face has a precise size which is the same nominal size as that of a material removing tool. The device's shaft allows for concentric and precision fastening of the device to a spindle or a fixture. The nose of the device is located on the end of the larger of the two conical shapes which is visible exposed when mounted and used. The end of the device is at the end of the smaller of the two conical shapes which is hidden after mounting. The combination of using the device and method will allow more accurate programming of machine tools which in turn will provide higher quality results on machined work pieces and reduced machining cycles.
