DIFFUSION BARRIER FOR IMPLANTABLE ELECTRODE LEADS
A process for producing an electrical conductor structure that involves embedding at least one metallic conductor track and at least one heating conductor in an electrically insulating substrate, and producing an electric current in the heating conductor so that a first layer of the substrate and a second layer of the substrate fuse in an area surrounding the heating conductor, to seal an interface between the two layers. A conductor structure is also disclosed, in particular in the form of an implantable electrode lead.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic electrofusion fitting and a self-monitoring method of strain
The invention provides a carbon fiber reinforced plastic electrofusion fitting and a self-monitoring method of strain for the fitting. Carbon fiber filled polymer is used to fabricate the fitting to improve the mechanical strength of the fitting. The fitting comprises an electrofusion fitting body embedded with a resistance heating wire and two terminals arranged on the electrofusion fitting body and connected to the two ends of the resistance heating wire respectively. For the self-monitoring of strain, at least one pair of electrodes are set on the surface of the electrofusion fitting. The resistance change between electrodes caused by fitting deformation due to temperature change or mechanical loading during operation can be measured, and could be further used for structural health monitoring of the electrofusion fitting. The combination of mechanical enhancement and strain sensing of the electrofusion fitting can improve the performance and reliability of plastic pipelines.
Pipe manipulation apparatus and methods
A pipe manipulation apparatus having a base frame and a sliding end slidable towards and away from the base frame, each of the base frame and sliding end having at least one pipe support coupled with a press clamp pivotable between an open position and a closed position, wherein in the open position, a pipe is placeable on to the at least one pipe support and, in the closed position, the inner surfaces of the press clamp and the pipe support define a bore in which a lengthwise portion of the pipe is receivable. The pipe manipulation apparatus may be portable, tiltable, and/or rotatable to accommodate pipes of various locations and angles.
Device and method for installing a tubular joint sleeve for a pipe comprising an inner lining
A device (20) for installing a tubular junction sleeve inside a pipe (1), having a mandrel (20a) of longitudinal axis (XX) supporting on its surface at least a first peripheral chamber (21) having a wall (21a) that is radially expandable by inflation. The first wall including at least one electrical connector (21b) suitable for being connected to one end of said heater wire. The connector being connected to an umbilical (24) including at least a compressed air feed duct for inflating the first chamber and an electrical power supply duct connected to the electrical connector. The device being characterized in that the mandrel supports on its outer surface a second peripheral chamber (22) having a wall (22a) that is radially expandable by inflation, and also a weld inspection device (23) arranged in the longitudinal direction of the mandrel.
Plastic tank having a welded frusto-conical flange joint
A plastic tank is comprised of two parts, a base and a top, that are permanently joined to each other by welding at a circumferential joint formed by two mating flanges of the parts. The faying surfaces of the flanges of the top and base have portions in the shape of a hollow truncated cone. Fusion weld elements are captured on the faying surfaces of the flanges of the assembled parts, and the elements melted by internal heating of metal portions of the elements.
Method of fusion welding large plastic parts
A large tubular plastic tank is formed by fusion welding together half-shell parts at lengthwise flange joints to form a tubular body. Then, end caps are fusion welded onto the outermost ends of the tubular body and an assembly of two or more bodies. Electric or electromagnetic energy is used to melt in situ the fusion weld elements which are captured between the joining surfaces of the parts. A fusion weld element is secured beforehand to linear a joining surface of at least one of two mated tank parts. The weld element exits the joint between two lengthwise-mated parts at the location of mating tabs extending from the mated tank parts; the tabs are subsequently cut away. A circumferential flange joint is made by securing a fusion weld element to at least one joining surface of the mated tank parts, where the ends of the element run through holes in the faying surface of the flange.
Heat shrink component and method of assembling a heat shrink component
A heat shrink component includes a heat shrink layer and a heating unit in thermal contact with at least a part of the heat shrink layer and heating the heat shrink layer to a heat shrink temperature. The heating unit includes an electrically conductive lead formed of copper and/or aluminum and having an electrical conductivity of more than 3.Math.10.sup.7 S/m. The heat shrink component has a first dimension in an expanded state and a second dimension in a shrunk state after heating. The first dimension is larger than the second dimension.
Method for producing a welded connection, and welding device
A method for connecting a thermoplastic line element to a connecting element includes the steps of: providing the at least one thermoplastic line element; providing the connecting element having a thermoplastic body wherein a heating element is embedded in the body for generating heat in a welding region for welding the body to the at least one line element; joining the connecting element to the at least one thermoplastic line element; providing a welding device for welding the connecting element to the at least one thermoplastic line element; welding the connecting element to at least one thermoplastic line element by generating heat in the welding region using the welding device. The welding of the connecting element to the at least one thermoplastic line element is stopped by the welding device before the end of the planned welding duration if an error criterion is met.
Ultrasonic NDT inspection system
A method and system for the ultrasonic non-destructive testing of joints in plastic pipes using A-scans. A hand-held ultrasonic transducer is used to perform an A-scan and a comparison made on a response from the interface region of the joint used to determine a quality of the joint. Levels of result can provide a binary output to give an indication of whether or not a defect is present in the joint. Comparison techniques are described. Tests for coupling efficiency and performance are described making the system useable by an unskilled technician. The system finds application in fault detection on electro-fusion welds in plastic pipe joints.
