COMPONENT MOUNTING ON STORAGE TANKS
A tank (e.g., an underground storage tank), and manufacturing methods therefore, may include a tank body having an exterior surface. A component is mounted on at least a non-planar portion of the exterior surface of the tank body using an adhesive (e.g., an MMA adhesive). For example, the component may be positioned on the non-planar portion of the exterior surface of the tank body after application of adhesive and pressure may be applied to maintain the position of the component on the non-planar portion of the exterior surface of the tank body as the adhesive is cured. The pressure may be removed upon curing of the adhesive and formation of a structural bond may occur at the adhesive interface between the mounting surface of the component and the non-planar portion of the exterior surface of the tank body.
CONDUCTIVE FILM ADHESIVE
An inventive composition and process for formation of a conductive bonding film are disclosed. The invention combines adhesive bonding sheet technologies (e.g. die attach films, or DAFs) with the electrical and thermal conductivity performance of transient liquid phase sintered paste compositions. The invention films are characterized by high bulk thermal and electrical conductivity within the film as well as low and stable thermal and electrical resistance at the interfaces between the inventive film and metallized adherends.
Conductive fastening system for composite structures
A conductive fastener system for connecting a composite structure to a support structure includes a composite structure hole that extends through the composite structure and shares a common axis with a support structure hole that extends at least partially through the support structure. A fastener comprising a shank having an outer surface passes through the composite structure hole and at least partially through the support structure hole and provides an annular space between the outer surface of the shank and the inner surface of the composite structure hole. The annular space is filled with a conductive paste that comprises conductive particles suspended in a bonding agent.
NOVEL ADHESIVE WITH SUBSTRATE COMPATIBILIZING PARTICLES
A pair of bonded substrates having a first substrate of a first material, a second substrate of the first material, and an adhesive bonding the first substrate to the second substrate, wherein the adhesive has chemically linked compatibilizing particles compatible with the first and second substrates. A composition of matter has an adhesive having a chemically linked particle network forming a bond between a first substrate and a second substrate, wherein compatibilizing particles in the particle network are compatible with the first and second substrates. A method of joining two structures of identical materials includes preparing first and second structures to expose bare material, applying an adhesive to the bare material on the first and second structures, the adhesive containing compatibilizing particles compatible with the material and the preparing allows interaction between the material and the compatibilizing particles, and curing the adhesive.
Method for joining a device to an object with the aid of ultrasonic vibration energy and device and installation suitable for the method
A method for joining a device to an object with the aid of a combination of ultrasonic vibration energy and induction heating, wherein the device includes a portion of a thermoplastic polymer and a susceptor additive wherein this portion is at least partly liquefied or plasticized through the ultrasonic vibration energy in combination with the induction heating and wherein the joining includes establishing a connection between the device and the object which connection is at least one of a positive fit connection, a weld, a press fit connection, and an adhesive connection. The induction heating is applied for rendering the device portion suitable for absorption of ultrasonic vibration energy than other device portions by raising its temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The ultrasonic vibration energy is used for liquefying or at least plasticizing the thermoplastic polymer of the named device portion.
Polylactic acid adhesive compositions and methods for their preparation and use
New adhesives and methods for preparing them are disclosed that include polylactic acid irradiated with gamma radiation, such as by a Co.sup.60 source. Irradiation times are used that improve the characteristics of the adhesive materials. Generally, the dose of radiation is from about 5 kGy to about 200 kGy of gamma irradiation. The adhesives generally have melting temperatures in the range of at least about 140 to about 148 C. such that they can be conveniently used in conventional glue guns and other glue equipment. The disclosed adhesives can provide bond strengths in the range of about 1,600 psi or more to about 2,500 psi or more. The disclosed adhesives can include a crosslinking agents. They can be used to join a wide range of substrates including wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, glass or combinations of substrates. They can be conveniently prepared by heating a polylactic acid (polylactic acid) preparation and mixing the molten polylactic acid with one or more crosslinkers when present. The molten mixture can then be and the polylactic acid can be irradiated with the desired dose of gamma radiation. Irradiation can occur before during or after mixing with the crosslinking agent and before or after shaping into the desired shape or even after use to join substrates. The adhesives can be used to join substrates by any known method once heated to a molten state.
METHOD OF ACTIVATING ADHESIVES
A method of fastening a second object to a first object includes: providing the first object with an attachment surface; providing the second object; placing the second object relative to the first object, with a resin composition in between the attachment surface and the second object, wherein the resin composition has a resin having a first viscosity and being in a flowable state; pressing the first and second objects against each other and causing mechanical vibration to act on at least one of the objects until the resin composition experiences a vibration induced activation, which includes at least one of reduction of the viscosity of the resin compared to the first viscosity and activation of particles dispersed in the resin. The pressing and mechanical vibration are continued or repeated until the resin has at least partially cross-linked and the viscosity of the resin is increased compared to the first viscosity.
NOVEL MATERIALS AND METHOD FOR JOINING FIBER REINFORCED PIPELINE
A method of joining fiberglass-reinforced composite pipes includes joining an inner tube of each pipe by fusion to form a fused bond, joining fiber reinforced polymer tubes of each pipe by depositing a silica glass particle epoxy directly on the fused bond and on bonded edges of the fiber reinforced polymer tubes as a composition to cover tube edges and the fused inner tube bond, and curing the composition.
NONMETALLIC JOINTS AND METHODS FOR FORMATION AND INSPECTION THEREOF
Disclosed are joints and methods for forming joints of nonmetallic components such as piping components made from a nonmetallic composite material. The components are joined by an adhesive containing an x-ray absorbing additive for providing a contrasting signal in x-ray inspection of the joint. The joints can be nondestructively tested by positioning the joints relative to an x-ray source and an x-ray detector. The joints and the adhesive therein are then exposed to x-ray radiation from the source of x-ray radiation. The x-ray radiation, having passed from the x-ray source to the x-ray detector, is detected over an area and an x-ray image of the x-ray radiation detected is created. The x-ray image is then read to identify defects in the joint.
