Methods and systems are provided for fabricating a composite structure. In one example, the composite structure may include a honeycomb core sandwiched between face sheets. An edge of the honeycomb core may be abraded and a top face sheet may be perforated. As such, a likelihood of delamination of the composite structure during a curing step may be reduced.

Tire sensor installation system and method

A method for installing a sensor onto an inner surface of a tire is generally disclosed. The method includes robotically deglazing at least a portion of the inner surface of the tire, defining a preconditioned surface. The sensor is robotically selected and a target surface of the sensor is cleaned. An adhesive is applied to at least a portion of the target surface of the sensor. In some embodiments, the adhesive is applied to a portion of the preconditioned surface. The sensor is robotically positioned, wherein the target surface of the sensor abuts the preconditioned surface. A wet-out operation is performed, wherein a predetermined pressure is applied to the sensor for a predetermined period of time to affix the sensor to the preconditioned surface.

Hollow bladder repair process

Disclosed herein is a method of repairing surface damage in an exterior surface of a hollow bladder, made of a cured elastomer. The method comprises placing first strips, made of an uncured elastomer, at least partially within the surface damage in the exterior surface of the hollow bladder in a side-by-side arrangement. The method also comprises sealing the surface damage, the first strips, and a portion of the exterior surface surrounding the surface damage in a vacuum bag. The method further comprises reducing pressure within the vacuum bag relative to outside the vacuum bag. The method additionally comprises while the pressure within the vacuum bag is reduced, heating the first strips from within the vacuum bag to cure the first strips.

Peel ply for surface preparation and a method of surface preparation prior to adhesive bonding. A resin-rich peel ply is applied onto a curable, resin-based composite substrate, followed by co-curing. After co-curing, the composite substrate is fully cured but the matrix resin in the peel ply remains partially cured. When the peel ply is removed, a roughened, bondable surface with chemically-active functional groups is revealed. The composite substrate with the chemically-active, bondable surface may be bonded to another composite substrate to form a covalently-bonded structure.

Sandwich panel joints and methods for joining sandwich panels
10612575 · 2020-04-07 · ·

Joints for joining panels together, such as for joining honeycomb sandwich panels used in aerospace applications, and methods of joining said panels are disclosed. In some examples of disclosed joints, a first panel and a second panel can be joined together to form a joint. The first panel can be a flat panel that includes a rabbet formed along a first longitudinal edge, and the second panel can be a curved panel that includes a notch formed along a second longitudinal edge. In forming the joint, a portion of the rabbet can be positioned within the notch, and the flat panel and curved panel can be oriented at a non-parallel and non-perpendicular angle to one another. Adhesive can be applied along the rabbet and/or the notch in order to secure the joint.
