Integrated shape memory polymer and caul tool
A method of forming a composite material part using an integrated shape memory polymer (SMP) and caul tool comprises the steps of: placing a caul on a positive feature of a mold, deforming the SMP from a relaxed state such that the SMP integrates with the caul to form an integrated SMP and caul tool, placing composite material on the integrated SMP and caul tool, heating the composite material to cure the composite material to form a composite material part while the SMP remains deformed, and stimulating the SMP to return to the relaxed state such that the SMP separates from the caul and the composite material part.
Apparatus and methods for repairing composite laminates
An apparatus and methods include infusing the flowable matrix material into a space in the composite laminate through the use of a formed hole extending at least partially through the composite laminate. In addition, the apparatus and methods include infusing the flowable matrix material into a space in the composite laminate in a stepwise manner in order to obtain more complete filling of such space.
Fabrication Apparatuses and Methods
One embodiment of a method according to the present disclosure may use a fixture with one or more boot recesses formed therein. An embedded member may be engaged with a boot and placed in a boot recess. Substrate lay-up may be placed around all or a portion of the embedded member and an outer member may be positioned over the substrate lay-up. A cover may be positioned over the outer member and engaged with the fixture. The pressure within an interior portion of the fixture may be reduced to less than ambient pressure and resin may be introduced to interact with the substrate lay-up and allowed to cure.
Composite forming station
A composite forming station for forming a T-profile composite part from a planar laminate. The composite forming station includes in-line rollers arranged along a forming direction, wherein a thickness and/or edge angle each roller is greater than the preceding roller, wherein the rollers gradually splay apart feet sections of the planar laminate to convert the laminate to the T-profile composite part.
Method for using composite tooling to manufacture composite parts
A method and apparatus for manufacturing a composite part is provided. A composite laminate is formed upon a first tool that provides a first mold line for the composite laminate. A second tool is placed against the composite laminate in which a tooling surface of the second tool is used to create a second mold line for the composite laminate. The second tool is formed from a plurality of prefabricated sections joined by a joining material in which the tooling surface is formed by a layer adhered to the plurality of prefabricated sections and the joining material.
Caul Plate System for Aircraft Fabrication
Methods and apparatus involved in the process of hardening a composite part are disclosed herein. The methods include applying a preform to a mandrel, covering the preform with a caul plate, sealing the caul plate to the mandrel, pushing the caul plate toward the preform and the mandrel and hardening the preform into a composite part while the caul plate is held against the preform. The apparatus include a mandrel, a caul plate which defines a surface of a preform and where the caul plate may include a rigid material and seals disposed between the mandrel and the caul plate. In an additional aspect, the apparatus may include a sealed chamber with a mandrel and a caul plate and a circumferential seal between the mandrel and the caul plate.
In-Line Autoclave Adapted To Preform Geometry
A method for hardening a preform into a composite part is provided. The method comprises aligning a layup mandrel carrying a preform for insertion into an autoclave having an inner surface that is complementary to a contour of the preform. The layup mandrel is then sealed into the autoclave.

Tool for curing a composite component
The present invention provides a tool 1 for curing a composite component, the tool comprising a lay-up surface 8 for laying-up layers of an uncured composite component, a cover assembly 9 for moving in relation to the lay-up surface to cover a layed-up uncured composite component on the lay-up surface, the cover assembly comprising a sealable cover for sealing around the uncured composite component on the lay-up surface to form a sealed zone, and a vacuum port 25 for providing a vacuum to the sealed zone, wherein the tool further comprises at least one heating element 15, 53 within the sealed zone for heating the uncured composite component. The invention also provides a method of manufacturing a composite component and a composite component. The composite component may form at least part of a piece of aircraft furniture, such as an aircraft seat shell.
