Asymmetric composite membranes and methods for their preparation are disclosed. The membranes comprise a cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer coated on a film of cross-linked sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) adhered to a sheet of hydrophilicitized microporous polyolefin. The microporous polyolefin is typically microporous poly(ethylene). The membranes have improved selectivity with the regard to the rejection of solutes in reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration applications.

The invention relates to a process for the purification of a neutral human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) from a fermentation broth, the process comprising the steps of: (i) separating biomass from the fermentation broth to provide a crude solution; (ii) treating the crude solution with: (a) a cation-exchange material; (b) an anion-exchange material; and (c) a cation-exchange adsorbent resin; thereby obtaining a purified solution containing the neutral human milk oligosaccharide. Further, the invention relates to a process for fermentatively producing HMO in a fermentation broth and purifying the HMO from the broth.

A liquid treatment system, in particular for concentrating milk, and method therefor. The system includes an inlet configured to receive fresh raw milk; and a pressure vessel connected to the inlet. The pressure vessel is provided with a pressure system configured to realize a pressure of at least 10 bar in the pressure vessel. A reverse osmosis membrane is included for filtering the raw milk. A pump is provided for pumping the raw milk under pressure out of the pressure vessel and through or along the reverse osmosis membrane. A permeate outlet is provided for the separated water and a milk outlet is provided for the concentrated milk.
