Temperature compensated self-inflating tire system
A self-inflating tire assembly includes an adjustable valve having: a housing having first end and a second end, and a central bore which extends from the first end to the second end; a piston slidably mounted within the central bore at the first end of the housing, a cap mounted in the second end of the housing forming a chamber with the housing, wherein a spring is mounted within the chamber and having a first end for engagement with the piston and a second end for engagement with a bottom wall of the chamber, said cap further comprising a fluid chamber projecting from the bottom wall of the chamber, wherein the piston is movable to seal the fluid chamber, wherein the housing is made from a material having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the fluid chamber.
Air maintenance tire pumping tube cover strip
An air maintenance tire assembly is provided in which an elongate groove is located within a first sidewall of a tire. The groove forms an elongate channel within the first sidewall and an elongate groove access passage extends from the elongate channel to an access opening located at an outward surface of the first sidewall. An air pumping tube inserts through the groove access passage and is positioned within the groove channel. A cover strip attaches to the first sidewall to enclose the access opening of the groove access passage. The cover strip is positioned along the first sidewall at a higher distance from the bead region of the first sidewall than the groove channel to avoid contact with a wheel rim flange when the tire is mounted to a wheel rim.
TIRE CONDITION OR VEHICLE MONITORING SYSTEM AND METHOD
All tire systems, including tire systems that include self-inflating devices, need to have the ability to regularly and reliably monitor and report vehicle and tire conditions for safety reasons. For a self-inflating tire, this can be accomplished by monitoring the operation of the self-inflation system, and assessing if it is consistent with a tire in good condition.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING AN AIR MAINTENANCE TIRE
Apparatus and method for manufacturing an air maintenance tire includes an air pumping tube assembly station constructing an air pumping tube sub-assembly, a tire preparation station for forming passageways in the tire to accept an outlet device of the air pumping tube sub-assembly, an air pumping tube sub-assembly installation station and a pressure regulator installation station. The air pumping tube sub-assembly inserts into an elongate tire groove opening, facilitated by groove-spreading apparatus.
Outlet screw assembly for an air maintenance tire
An air maintenance tire assembly includes an air pumping passageway located within a tire sidewall to generate compressed air. An outlet screw assembly includes an elongate screw body residing within a profiled sidewall bore. The screw body extends through an axial span of the first sidewall to the tire cavity to conduct air from the sidewall air passageway to the tire cavity. The screw body has enlarged sectional end components to deter radial dislodging of the screw body from the sidewall bore during operation.
Inlet air passage screw assembly for an air maintenance tire
An air maintenance tire assembly having an elongate air pumping sidewall air passageway includes an inlet air passage screw assembly inserted through a tire sidewall profiled bore to conduct air from outside the tire into a regulator positioned within a tire cavity. The screw assembly includes a screw body having at an outer end a large-diameter filter housing, a smaller-diameter midsection shank portion, and an inner large-diameter valve housing connecting to the regulator within the tire cavity. A valve mechanism seats within the valve housing and moves between an open position conducting air from the screw body into the regulator assembly and a closed position preventing a backflow of air from the regulator assembly.
CONTROL VALVE FOR AN AIR MAINTENANCE TIRE
A control valve suitable for use with a tire and pump assembly is described that controls the flow of air from the pump into the tire. The control valve includes an optional bi-directional feature. The pathways alternatively operate to deliver ambient non-pressurized air to the air pumping tube in response to directional tire rotation against a ground surface.
INLET CONTROL VALVE FOR AN AIR MAINTENANCE TIRE
An inlet control valve suitable for use with a tire and pump assembly is described that controls the flow of air from the pump into the tire. The inlet control valve includes an optional bi-directional feature. The pathways alternatively operate to deliver ambient non-pressurized air to the air pumping tube in response to directional tire rotation against a ground surface.
AIR MAINTENANCE TIRE AND VALVE ASSEMBLY AND METHOD
An air maintenance tire assembly includes a tire having a tire cavity bounded by first and second sidewalls extending to a tire tread region, a pressure control assembly attached to an elongate valve stem projecting from a rim, the pressure control assembly being external to the tire cavity, the elongate valve stem projecting outward from the tire cavity and operative to admit pressurized air into the tire cavity through the pressure control assembly, the first sidewall having an annular sidewall air passageway therein operatively located to compress segment by segment responsive to a bending strain introduced into the first sidewall from a rolling tire footprint thereby forcing air, segment by segment, along the annular air passageway, a tube housing joining both ends of the annular air passageway, and a connecting tube extending from the tube housing to the pressure control assembly, the connecting tube operative to sequentially direct air forced along the air passageway, first, into the tube housing, the pressure control assembly and, then, into the elongate valve stem as the tire rolls over a ground surface.
