A vehicle mirror includes: an image display section that displays an image with first polarized light; and a mirror section disposed on an image output side of the image display section, wherein, in order from the image display section side, the mirror section includes, for example, a first polarizer that transmits the first polarized light and reflects second polarized light, a polarization controller that controls a polarization state of light, and a second polarizer that transmits the first polarized light and absorbs the second polarized light, wherein the polarization controller includes a liquid crystal layer, a first electrode being set on a first polarizer side of the liquid crystal layer, and a second electrode being set on a second polarizer side of the liquid crystal layer, and wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is formed with multiple area electrodes.

Method of making a mirror substrate for a vehicular rearview mirror assembly

A method of making a mirror substrate for a vehicular rearview mirror assembly includes providing a glass substrate having a planar front surface, a planar rear surface and a circumferential perimeter edge. The glass substrate is positioned at a fixture and the front perimeter edge portion of the glass substrate is ground by moving a grinding wheel around the periphery of the glass substrate to establish a rounded surface about and around the periphery of the glass substrate and between the planar front surface and a rear portion of the perimeter edge of the glass substrate. The rounded surface has a radius of curvature of at least 2.5 mm. The rounded surface provides a curved transition between the planar front surface of the glass substrate and the rear portion of the perimeter edge of the glass substrate. The planar rear surface of the glass substrate is coated with a coating.

Systems and methods are provided to determine glare information. An optical filter is configured to attenuate visible light and pass near-infrared light and an image sensor is configured to detect light reflected by a surface after the reflected light passes through the optical filter. The image sensor is further configured to generate image data comprising a detected near-infrared portion of the light reflected by the surface. Processing circuitry is configured to receive the image data from the image sensor and determine near-infrared glare information based on the received image. The near-infrared glare information can be used to adjust display parameter associated with the surface or characterize near-infrared glare properties of the surface.

Vehicular rearview mirror control system

A vehicular rearview mirror control system includes a plurality of rearview mirror assemblies having variable reflectance mirror reflective elements. An electronic control unit receives image data captured by a rear backup camera of the vehicle. The rearview mirror control system, responsive to processing a first subset of received image data captured by the rear backup camera, determines ambient light rearward of the vehicle. The rearview mirror control system, responsive to processing a second subset of received image data captured by the rear backup camera, determines glare light emanating from a headlight of another vehicle following the equipped vehicle. The first subset of received image data is different than the second subset of received image data. The rearview mirror control system generates an output to control dimming of respective ones of the mirror reflective elements of the plurality of rearview mirror assemblies based on location of the determined glare light.
