TORTUOUS PATH FILTER FOR AIRBAG INFLATOR

An airbag assembly may include an airbag and an inflator that provides inflation gas to inflate the airbag. A filter module may be positioned such that inflation gas exiting the inflator must first pass through the filter module. The filter module may be formed of a sheet of metal that is wrapped into a generally spiraling tubular shape. The filter module may have an inner layer, an intermediate layer, and an outer layer. The intermediate layer generally encircles the inner layer, and the outer layer generally encircles the inner layer and the intermediate layer in a spiraling fashion. The inner layer, the intermediate layer, and the outer layer each may have a pattern of holes and dimples that are separate from and/or displaced from each other. The dimples may protrude toward an adjacent layer to maintain spacing to enable relatively unrestricted gas flow from the holes of the inner layer through unaligned holes of the intermediate layer and the outer layer. The resulting tortuous gas flow path may help to slow, cool, and/or purify the gas before it exits the inflator.

Gas generator

A gas generator includes an elongated cylindrical housing, an accommodation chamber defining member arranged in the housing, a gas generating agent, and an autoignition agent. The accommodation chamber defining member includes a cylindrical portion which extends in a direction in parallel to an axial direction of the housing and accommodates the gas generating agent therein. A heat insulating layer is located between the housing and the cylindrical portion. The autoignition agent is arranged in a portion inside the housing in the axial direction of the housing where no heat insulating layer is provided, as being in contact with the housing with a member made of a metal being interposed.

The present invention provides a cylindrical filter for a pyrotechnic device including a gas generating agent or pressurized gas as a gas generation source. The cylindrical filter includes a first annular end surface, a second annular end surface positioned opposite to the first annular end surface in an axial direction, and a cylindrical wall surface between the first annular end surface and the second annular end surface. At least one of the first annular end surface or the second annular end surface includes a weakened portion. When the first annular end surface includes the weakened portion, the weakened portion includes a first annular wall portion that protrudes from the first annular end surface and has a thickness less than a thickness of the first annular end surface. When the second annular end surface includes the weakened portion, the weakened portion includes a second annular wall portion that protrudes from the second annular end surface and has a thickness less than a thickness of the second annular end surface.

A gas generator includes a housing, a partition member which divides a space in the housing into a combustion chamber where a gas generating agent is accommodated and a filter chamber where a filter is accommodated, and a sealed container which externally seals the gas generating agent. The filter has a hollow portion which reaches an axial end surface located on a side of the combustion chamber. The sealed container is made of a member relatively low in mechanical strength so as to burst or melt as a result of burning of the gas generating agent. The partition member is made of a member relatively high in mechanical strength such that only a portion opposed to the hollow portion bursts as a result of burning of the gas generating agent to provide a communication hole which allows communication between the combustion chamber and the filter chamber with each other.
