A sub-assembly for a housing of a gas generating system is provided. The sub-assembly includes a housing portion and an insert attached to the housing portion such that at least a portion of a force applied to one of the housing portion and the attached insert is transferred through the attachment to the other one of the housing portion and the attached insert. A housing, a gas generating system, and a vehicle occupant protection system incorporating the sub-assembly are also disclosed.

Motor vehicle airbag system

An airbag system for a motor vehicle includes an airbag arrangement with at least one airbag and a gas generator for filling the airbag arrangement. A base body includes two end regions, and an ignition element protrudes from the base body between the two end regions. The folded airbag arrangement in a packed state envelops at least one of the end regions in multiple layers on one part of its outer periphery.

An airbag apparatus which is capable of restraining an occupant in a stable position even during an oblique collision, and which is capable of suppressing an injury value of the occupant. An airbag apparatus 100 restrains an occupant 132 of a vehicle. The airbag apparatus 100 is provided with: a main bag 112 which is bag-shaped and inflates and deploys in front of a front passenger seat 104 of the vehicle; and a center bag 114 which is bag-shaped and inflates and deploys on an inner side of the main bag 112 in a vehicle width direction. The center bag 114 has a rear region 160 which extends further towards a rear of the vehicle than the main bag 112, and a curved surface 164, which projects towards a main bag 112 side in the vehicle width direction, is formed on the rear region 160.

Gas generator

A gas generator includes a housing and a partition portion dividing a space in the housing into a combustion chamber accommodating a gas generating agent and a filter chamber accommodating a filter. The partition portion includes a first region which opens at the time of activation by being located to be opposed to a hollow portion of the filter and an annular second region which does not open even at the time of activation by being located to be opposed to a portion of an axial end surface of the filter except for the hollow portion. The second region is provided with a large-thickness portion constructed to be greater in thickness than the first region and opposed to an outer edge portion of the axial end surface of the filter, and the large-thickness portion is constructed to gradually be greater in thickness from an inner circumferential end portion toward an outer circumferential end portion.

Fixing structure for inflator and airbag

An inflator and airbag are fixed by a fixing member including a lower fixing member that supports and fixes the inflator from a lower surface side of a plate portion. The lower fixing member has a tubular wall portion and a flange portion formed at an opening at one end. The tubular wall portion has an inner surface in a shape that is fitted to a circumferential wall surface, including a lower annular step surface, of the inflator housing. The flange portion has a plurality of bolt holes and abuts against a lower surface of the plate portion. The airbag and the lower fixing member are fixed with a bolt and a nut mounted through the airbag, the plate portion, and the flange portion of the lower fixing member.

The initiator is actuatable by an electrical power source having a ground wire and includes a cup defining an interior for receiving a pyrotechnic material and a pair of electrical pins extending from the cup and arranged to be in reaction initiating communication with the pyrotechnic material through a bridge wire. The initiator additionally includes an over-molded body having a first end defining a pocket for receiving the electrical power source and a mounting ring extending around a least a portion of a periphery of the over-molded body. The initiator further includes an electrically conductive member providing electrical communication between the mounting ring and an inner diameter of the pocket. The electrically conductive member is molded in place within the over-molded body.

The present invention provides a gas generator, including: a housing with a gas discharge port; an igniter assembly and a gas generating agent in the housing; and a metallic cup of constant inner diameter covering the igniter to define a charging chamber. The igniter assembly includes a main body, including an ignition portion and a electro-conductive pin integrated with a metallic collar by a resin. The metallic collar has a fixing portion inserted into a hole in a bottom surface of the housing and a remaining portion projecting inward from the bottom surface of the housing, and a guide portion. An inner circumferential wall surface of the metallic cup and an outer circumferential wall surface of the fixing portion are press-fitted, and an annular gap is formed between the inner circumferential wall of the metallic cup member and an outer circumferential wall surface of the guide portion.

A vehicle side airbag device includes a side airbag, an inner tether that extends in the seat forward direction at the seat width direction inner side of the side airbag in the inflated and deployed state and has a distal end portion anchored to the side airbag, and an outer tether that extends outward in the seat width direction from the seat rear side of the side airbag in the inflated and deployed state and has a distal end portion anchored to the side airbag. An upper end portion of the distal end portion of the outer tether is positioned further toward an upper end side of the side airbag than an upper end portion of the distal end portion of the inner tether.

Inflator

The present invention provides an inflator including a rupturable plate closing between the ignition device chamber having a gas discharge port and the pressurized gas chamber filled with a pressurized gas; a partition wall provided with a rod axially separating an interior of an ignition device unit housing, corresponding to the ignition device chamber, into two chambers; a combustion chamber provided on the side of a first end of the ignition device unit housing and provided with an igniter, and a diffuser chamber having the gas discharge port and provided on the side of a second end, which is an opposite end to the first end, the rupturable plate being circular and having, a circumferential edge fixing portion and a circular non-fixing portion on an inner portion other than the circumferential edge fixing portion, a fragile portion formed by not less than three grooves provided on a first surface facing the bottle, the grooves extending from a circumference of the circular non-fixing portion or from positions in the vicinity thereof, as a start point, toward a center of the circular non-fixing portion such that each of end points of the grooves does not reach the center of the circular non-fixing portion, the rod fixed to the partition wall and extending toward the rupturable plate, and the rod colliding with the rupturable plate due to a gas pressure generated by activation of the igniter, coming into contact with all of the end points in the fragile portion and rupturing the rupturable plate.
