An airbag is a passenger seat airbag that inflates and deploys between a passenger seat and an instrument panel, and has side vent holes and a front vent hole. When an inflator is actuated in a state where a passenger close to the instrument panel exists, a valve cloth opens the front vent hole with the vicinity of the front vent hole away from the windshield.

Multi-chamber airbag systems for use in aircraft and other vehicles are described herein. In some embodiments, an occupant restraint system includes a multi-chamber airbag that deploys from an occupant restraint (e.g., a lap seat belt) in an aircraft. The multi-chamber airbag can include a first portion that inflates generally upward in front of the occupant's torso, and a second portion that inflates in front of the first portion. The first portion and/or the second portion can include multiple chambers (e.g., generally cylindrical-shaped chambers) that, when inflated, provide the airbag with a shape and/or contact surfaces which can help to maintain the position of the airbag between the occupant and a strike object or hazard. In other embodiments, multi-chamber airbags configured in accordance with the present disclosure can me mounted to a structure (e.g., a monument, console, seat back, etc.) positioned generally in front of the occupant. The structure-mounted airbag can deploy generally toward the occupant in the event of a vehicle impact or other potentially harmful event to protect the occupant from impact injury.

An airbag venting device (10) for controlling an internal pressure of an airbag (12) of a vehicle occupant safety system (5) comprises a housing (24) which includes a first flow orifice (18) facing away from the airbag (12) and a second flow orifice (20) facing the airbag (12), wherein the housing (24) has an axial total length (26), the first flow orifice (18) has a first axial opening length (34) and the second flow orifice (20) has a second axial opening length (34). Moreover, the airbag venting device (10) includes an adjustable closure element (22) assigned to the housing (24) which, in a closing position, closes and, in an open position, releases at least one of the two flow orifices (18, 20), and an actuator device (30) provided at a front end (28) of the housing (24). The actuator device (30) interacts with the closure element (22) to release and/or to close the flow orifice (18, 20), and, in doing so, the axial total length (26) of the housing (24) is less than 3 times the length of the longer axial opening length (34) of the two flow orifices (18, 20).

AIRBAG INFLATOR WITH PRESSURE RELIEF AND INCREASED COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY

An airbag inflator includes a lower pressure vessel supporting an initiator assembly, a booster can centrally mounted in the lower pressure vessel and secured to the initiator assembly, and an energetics canister secured over the booster can such that the energetics canister is positioned radially between the lower pressure vessel and the booster can. An energetics cover encloses a circumferential space between the booster can and the energetics canister. A flow diverter closes the booster can and includes inlet vent openings downstream of the energetics cover. An upper pressure vessel positioned over the flow diverter and engaging the lower pressure vessel includes an exit orifice sealed with a rupturable membrane. A manifold is secured over the upper pressure vessel. The inflator increases combustion efficiency and lowers gaseous effluents.
