A control system for a vehicle capable of traveling in first and second traveling states is provided. The second traveling state requires an operation related to traveling by a passenger more than the first traveling state. The system changes, based on a traveling situation of the vehicle, an upper limit speed at which the vehicle can travel in the first traveling state. The system performs notification to the passenger of a request for a predetermined operation at a timing when a traveling speed of the vehicle reaches a predetermined speed when switching from the first traveling state to the second traveling state. A difference between the upper limit speed and the predetermined speed is increased in a case where the upper limit speed is high compared to a case where the upper limit speed is low.

In one or more embodiments, a method comprises receiving, at a processor, an input signal from an input device in response to a first actuation of the input device by a driver of an autonomous vehicle. The second actuation has an actuation pattern different from an actuation pattern of the first actuation. In response to the input signal, a determination is made by the processor to determine whether the autonomous vehicle can perform a maneuver safely. In response to determining that the autonomous vehicle can perform the maneuver safely, a signal is sent by the processor to cause the autonomous vehicle to perform the maneuver.

The vehicle control system is designed to consecutively detect a plurality of signaling units during travel of the vehicle. The vehicle control system is also designed to determine, for each of the plurality of signaling units and on the basis of data relating to the relevant signaling unit, whether the driving function can be operated in the automated mode or only in the manual mode at the relevant signaling unit. The vehicle control system is further designed to operate the driving function in the manual mode at at least one first signaling unit of the plurality of signaling units although it has been determined, on the basis of the data relating to the first signaling unit, that the first signaling unit can be operated in the automated mode.
