A steering system includes an actuator, a steering wheel that generates inputs for the actuator in a manual steer-by-wire control state, and a controller that determines operating conditions for the actuator, the steering wheel, or both. The controller determines blended steering angles based on manual steering angles of the steering wheel and automatic steering angles associated with an automated steer-by-wire control state. The controller transitions operation of the steering system from the manual steer-by-wire control state to the automated steer-by-wire control state when all operating conditions are satisfied and uses a blending function that applies weighting values to the manual steering angles and the automated steering angles to determine the blended steering angles. The controller controls the actuator using the blended steering angles.

In the stability control mode, the controller adjusts an actual drive output of the dual path machine according to data received from the input sensors and feedback received from the output sensors so as to reduce a difference between the actual drive output and a desired drive output. In selective rear-steer engagement and actuation mode, the controller engages rear-steer mechanisms with caster wheels of the dual path machine and actuates the caster wheels via the rear-steer mechanisms if a criterion is satisfied. The controller disengages the rear-steer mechanisms from the caster wheels or does not actuate the caster wheels if the criterion is not satisfied.

Provided is an electric assisted power steering apparatus having a structure able to disconnect a worm shaft from any malfunctioning motor of motors connected to opposite end portions of the worm shaft, thereby preventing the worm shaft from rotating heavily or failing to rotate. Even in the case in which the worm shaft is disconnected from the malfunctioning motor, a target rotation speed of the properly-operating motor is increased to prevent sudden changes in auxiliary torque occurring on a steering shaft, thereby promoting the safety of a driver. Torque required for the worm shaft is distributed to the two motors, thereby increasing the rotation speeds of the motors and reducing the size and fabrication costs of the motors.
