A control system for a trailer or dolly, wherein the trailer or dolly comprises a perception sensor which is directed in a first travelling direction of the trailer or dolly and a coupling member for coupling with a vehicle further ahead in the first travelling direction, wherein the control system is configured to provide and/or use data from the sensor for a first control mode when the trailer or dolly is not coupled to the vehicle via the coupling member and to provide and/or use data from the sensor for a second control mode different from the first control mode when the trailer or dolly is coupled to the vehicle via the coupling member.

Trailer stand

The present disclosure is directed to a trailer stand for a semi-trailer comprising a frame having a front end, a back end, the front end having a pair of front legs and the back end having a pair of back legs; a wheel assembly having a wheel assembly frame, the wheel assembly frame comprising at least two wheels; a pair of stepped assemblies, each of the pair of stepped assemblies connected to the top of one of the pair of front legs and one of the pair of back legs, the pair of stepped assemblies providing a plurality of landing areas for an underside of the semi-trailer; and a lifting system connected to the wheel assembly and to the frame, the lifting system configured to raise and lower the frame relative to the wheel assembly.

Methods and apparatus for an active convertor dolly
20240227619 · 2024-07-11 ·

The disclosure is directed at an apparatus for an active converter dolly for use in a tractor-trailer configuration. In one aspect, the apparatus includes a system to connect a first trailer towed behind a towing vehicle to a second trailer. The apparatus further includes a kinetic energy recovery device for translating the mechanical motions or actions of the dolly into electricity or electrical energy so that this energy can be used to charge a battery or to power other functionality for either the dolly or the tractor-trailer. The active dolly may also operate to assist in shunting the tractor-trailer. The active dolly is operable in a number of modes to increase vehicle performance and efficiency.

Winch slide-out trailer undercarriage
12030563 · 2024-07-09 ·

A winch assembly for moving a first fifth wheel outwardly from a first trailer and engaging a king pin on a second trailer. The winch assembly includes a pair of parallel, spaced apart rails mounted on the underside of the first trailer. A slide out frame is mounted between the rails and attached to a front axle and a real axle, with wheels. The slide out frame includes the first fifth wheel adapted for engaging the king pin on the front of a second trailer. The first fifth wheel is attached to a pair of first cables on winch drums, driven by winch motors. The winch motors are used for rotating cable drums for retracting the first fifth wheel along a length of the trailer. Also, a pair of second cables on winch drums, driven by winch motors, are attached to the slide out frame. The second cables are used to extend the first fifth wheel outwardly from the rear of the first trailer for engaging the fifth wheel to the second trailer.

PORTABLE TRAILER STANDS

Example portable trailer stands for supporting parked trailers are disclosed herein. Some example portable trailer stands disclosed herein comprise two telescopic posts supporting a generally horizontal beam. Some examples include spring-loaded retractable wheels for selectively installing and removing the trailer stand from underneath a trailer left parked on a driveway. After being positioned under the trailer, the posts extend to lift the beam solidly up against the underside of the trailer. To accommodate conditions where the driveway is not parallel to the trailer's underside, some example posts can be lengthened independently and have angular play that allows the beam to tilt. In some examples, the horizontal axle of the trailer stand wheels is perpendicular to the beam so that the trailer stand can be readily installed from either the front or side of the trailer. Some examples have a kingpin-receiving groove in the beam or have some other kingpin-receiving feature.

HITCH ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A STABILIZER FOR A TRAILER DOLLY
20240262141 · 2024-08-08 ·

A hitch assembly for attaching a following trailer to a leading trailer and preventing lateral pivoting of the hitch assembly with respect to the leading trailer includes a dolly which laterally pivotally attaches to a hitch of the leading trailer. The dolly trails the leading trailer and has a fifth wheel hitch for attaching to a following trailer. A stabilizer on the dolly is deployable near a rear end of the leading trailer such that lateral pivoting of the dolly with respect to the leading trailer is limited or entirely obstructed. The inhibiting action of the stabilizer facilitates accurate alignment of the fifth wheel hitch with the following trailer.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AN ACTIVE CONVERTOR DOLLY

The disclosure is directed at a method and apparatus for an active convertor dolly for use in a tractor-trailer configuration. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a system to connect a tractor to a trailer. The apparatus further includes a charge generating system for translating the mechanical motions or actions of the dolly into electricity or electrical energy so that this energy can be used to charge a battery or to power other functionality for either the dolly or the tractor-trailer. The active dolly may also operate to assist in shunting the tractor-trailer.

SELF-POWERED ACTIVELY STEERABLE CONVERTER DOLLIES FOR LONG COMBINATION VEHICLES
20180304944 · 2018-10-25 · ·

Provided are self-powered actively steerable converter dollies (SPASCDs) for long combination vehicles (LCVs), LCVs utilizing SPASCDs, and methods of operating such LCVs. These SPASCDs could be used with conventional tractors and/or specifically configured tractors. A SPASCD may include an electrical drive, which can generate power (e.g., to charge SPASCD's battery) or generate torque using the electrical power stored in SPASCD's battery (e.g., to assist the tractor during acceleration or going uphill). The SPASCD also comprises steerable wheels and a steering component, configured to change the steering angle of the steerable wheels. The steering angle may be changed in response to various inputs, such as the steering angle of the tractor's front steerable wheels, the steering angle of the steerable wheels of another trailer in the same LCV, sensor inputs, and the like. This steering feature allows change the track of the SPASCD, e.g., to follow the tractor's track.
