The combination of R.sub.2-R.sub.8 is such that the N-alkyl group is a branched C.sub.5 alkyl or branched or linear C.sub.6-C.sub.8 alkyl group. The new carboxamides are valuable sensory ingredients which provide long-lasting cooling sensation and freshness in personal care, oral care, cosmetic products, pharmaceutical preparations, confectionary, food and beverages.

Methods and compositions for regulating fatty acid uptake and/or decreasing gastric motility in an animal are provided. The method comprises administering an antagonist of integrin .sub.v.sub.3 or .sub.v.sub.5 to an animal in an amount sufficient to reduce fatty acid uptake in the animal, thereby reducing fatty acid uptake in the animal. In some embodiments, the antagonist is an antibody. Also provided is a method of increasing fatty acid uptake and/or gastric motility in an animal.

Chewing gums and gum bases comprising multi-block copolymers
Chewing gums and chewing gum bases which are cud-forming and chewable at mouth temperature contains a multi-block copolymer having at least two repeating sequences of at least two different polymeric blocks having at least three monomer units each. The multi-block copolymer optionally includes linking units and may be formulated to have non-covalent crosslinking between the copolymer chains. The multi-block copolymer is optionally plasticized with a compatible di-block copolymer to function as an elastomer system in the gum base. Characteristics of the multi-block copolymers can be selected to produce gum bases and chewing gums having desired properties. In some cases, chewed cuds formed from the gum bases may exhibit improved removability from environmental surfaces to which they may become undesirably attached.

The invention provides improvements of lantibiotics useful for reducing the numbers of microbes or the reproduction of microbes in or on subjects or objects. One embodiment of the invention provides variants of antibiotics wherein the amino acid at position (1) is changed to Ile or Gly, the amino acid at position (4) is changed to an Ala, the amino acid at position (4) is removed, the amino acid at position (5) is changed to an Ala, or wherein, as in the case of MU1140, the amino acid at position (13) is Arg, the Arg at position (13) is substituted with Asp, or combinations of two or more these changes or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
