An aircraft is disclosed having a device and an aircraft wing. The aircraft wing includes a main wing element and a movable wing tip device attached to a tip end of the main wing element. The movable wing tip device includes an accumulator configured to store energy and the movable wing tip device can move relative to the main wing element to vary a span of the aircraft wing. The accumulator is configured to transmit power to the device. The accumulator enables energy to trickle between the main wing element and the movable wing tip device whilst still providing a suitable power source to the device. Additional embodiments include a method of maintenance, and a method of operating the aircraft wing to store energy in the movable wing tip device.

An aircraft wing having a fixed wing and a wing tip device rotatable about a hinge at the tip of the fixed wing is disclosed. The wing further includes an actuation assembly for rotating the wing tip device about the hinge. The upper cover of the wing tip device includes an offset region extending inboard of the hinge axis, such that when the wing tip device is rotated to the ground configuration, the offset region extends into a space previously-occupied by the actuation assembly, but is outside the space occupied by the actuation assembly in the ground configuration.

An aircraft wing is disclosed including a closed surface wing tip device which includes an element or actuator within the wing tip for deforming/morphing the shape of the wing tip between geometrical configurations having different aerodynamic properties, for example including one with better overall fuel efficiency for a shorter journey and one with overall fuel efficiency better suited for a longer journey. The device includes a lower winglet with an essentially planar portion spaced apart from the main body of the wing by a blended transition region which is shaped such that the curvature of the local dihedral increases in the outboard direction. The device includes an upper aerofoil structure which with the winglet essentially forms the closed surface. There is also disclosed an aircraft wing tip device having a sigmoid shaped (e.g. S-shaped) aerofoil structure blending in with a main wing of the aircraft.

An aircraft with wing tip devices, for example, folding wing tips, is disclosed. The folding wing tip may have a flight configuration for use during flight, and a ground configuration for use in ground-based operations. The ground configuration creates a shorter wing span than when the aircraft is in the flight configuration. A hinge arrangement protrudes beyond an outer surface of the fixed wing and wing tip device. In order to reduce the aerodynamic effect of the protruding hinge a fairing may be provided. In the flight configuration the fairing comprises a rear portion with a concave surface, such that the fairing acts as a lift-generating surface when the aircraft is in flight.

The tip part is configured to pivot relative to the root part about a substantially horizontal axis, between a load-alleviating configuration in which the tip part is oriented relative to the root part such that at least one of the upper and lower surface of the tip part is positioned away from the respective surface of the root part and a flight configuration in which the upper and lower surfaces of the tip part are continuations of the upper and lower surfaces of the root part. The shape of the tip part is controllably switchable between a cruise shape in which the tip part has positive camber and a recovery shape in which the tip part has negative camber.
