De-esterification of biomass prior to ammonia pretreatment

A method is provided for pretreating cellulosic or lignocellulosic biomass comprising de-esterifying the biomass with an alkali treatment to produce de-esterified biomass; and pretreating the de-esterified biomass with ammonia to produce de-esterified ammonia pretreated biomass. In various embodiments, the de-esterified ammonia pretreated biomass has an amide concentration ranging from about 0.04 to about 25 mg/g biomass. In other embodiments, the amide concentration is no more than 0.04 mg/g biomass. Various ammonia pretreatment processes may be used, including liquid or gaseous ammonia pretreatments, including, but not limited to, liquid ammonium hydroxide pretreatments, various AFEX pretreatments, with or without biomass densification, and various cellulosic conversion pretreatments including “COBRA” pretreatments. Products (e.g., animal feed) and systems are also disclosed.

METHOD FOR PRODUCING AQUATIC MACROPHYTE MEAL FOR ANIMAL FEEDS AND AQUATIC MACROPHYTE MEAL OBTAINED

Management and processing of floating aquatic plants such as the species Pistia stratiotes (Araceae) and other water macrophytes produce (I) macrophyte paste, (II) macrophyte broth, (III) macrophyte bagasse, (IV) macrophyte bran and (V) macrophyte protein concentrates. The interaction of these by-products with ingredients used in animal and human feed significantly increase the final protein concentration of the feed obtaining high potential to supply animal and human demands for protein. The system provides a sustainable model for protein production that provides the essential benefits of treating effluent with high concentrations of organic matter in bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and dams to thereby provide an incalculable capacity for producing animal feeds and great potential for meeting human demand for protein.

METHOD FOR PROTECTING PROTEIN FROM HEAT DAMAGE AND REDUCING RUMEN DEGRADABILITY OF METHIONINE

Protein-containing feedstuffs which contain at least one protein feed material and either methionine or at least one feed product which contains methionine are resistant to reduction of digestibility as a result of heat damage during drying.

System and method for processing and treating an agricultural byproduct

An apparatus is configured to apply a treatment agent to an agricultural byproduct. The apparatus includes a fragmenting chamber where the agricultural byproduct is fragmented into particles. An initial amount of a treatment agent is applied to the byproduct in the fragmenting chamber. Particles of a desired size flow through a screen from the fragmenting chamber to a recovery zone. A second amount of the treatment agent is applied to the particles in the recovery zone. A regulator regulates the amount of the treatment agent applied to the particles in the fragmenting chamber and the amount of treatment agent applied in the in the recovery zone. The regulation may be based on one or more feedback mechanisms.
