Described herein is a method for operating a refrigerated stripping container containing respiring produce, the method including: passing a cooled CO.sub.2-rich air stream from an internal environment within the shipping container through a CO.sub.2 selective membrane of a membrane system to produce a cooled CO.sub.2-lean air stream and a CO.sub.2-rich permeate stream; retaining or returning the cooled CO.sub.2-lean air stream to the internal environment; and exhausting the CO.sub.2-rich permeate stream to an external environment outside of the shipping container: drawing external air or permitting external air to pass into the shipping container through an air vent with a pre-set fixed opening of the shipping container in a volume to at least balance a volume difference between the cooled CO.sub.2-rich air stream and the cooled CO.sub.2-lean air stream; wherein the membrane system is operated according to a pre-set mode, and the pre-set mode is independent of a measured gas concentration or pressure of the internal environment; and the pre-set fixed opening of the vent is selected based on one or more characteristics of the respiring produce and the pre-set mode of the membrane system.

METHODS FOR PACKAGING AND PRESERVING ZUCCHINI SPIRALS

Methods are provided for storing and preserving zucchini spirals, preferably so as to extend shelf life of the same. In one optional method, zucchini spirals are placed in a product containing space of a storage container atop a platform of a support structure. The storage container includes an internal compartment having the product containing space. The support structure defines the platform for supporting the zucchini spirals. The internal compartment further includes a reservoir, configured to retain liquid, below the platform. The platform and/or support structure are configured to direct liquid exuded from the zucchini spirals to the reservoir. Optionally, the reservoir comprises an absorbent material for absorbing liquid in the reservoir.

The insulated shell is configured for receiving the tote. The insulated shell includes a base and a plurality of side walls and is foldable between an expanded configuration and a collapsed configuration such that the tote fits inside the insulated shell when the insulated shell is in the expanded configuration. A system and method for storing perishable items under controlled atmospheric conditions is provided. Total atmospheric pressure within a vacuum chamber containing the perishable items is reduced to below a predetermined total pressure limit. Oxygen partial pressure within the chamber is monitored. When the Oxygen partial pressure falls below a predetermined lower Oxygen partial pressure limit, an Oxygen-containing gas is admitted to the vacuum chamber to raise the Oxygen partial pressure above the lower Oxygen partial pressure limit. Total atmospheric pressure within the chamber is also monitored. When the total atmospheric pressure reaches or exceed the predetermined total pressure limit, total pressure within the vacuum chamber is once again reduced below the predetermined total pressure limit.
