The invention relates to an adapter comprising an interior which accommodates a single serve capsule and which has an opening at a first end for introducing the capsule into the interior and a receptacle for a pricking spike at the opposite end.

A lid assembly outfits a liquid container and may function to position a liquid-permeable container relative to the liquid container. The lid assembly may include a lid body having a rim-receiving groove, an object-supportive depression or container support feature, and a primary liquid-letting aperture. The primary liquid-letting aperture primarily enables liquid egression from the liquid container thereby supporting certain lid body-based beverage service methodology, including the steps of supporting a liquid permeable container by the object-supportive depression or container support feature thereby forming a lid-container ensemble, and outfitting the liquid container with the lid-container ensemble. The liquid permeable container contains liquid permeable media and after being outfitted upon the liquid container via the lid body, liquid is directed into the liquid permeable container and through the liquid-permeable media for forming media-permeated, flavor-infused liquid. The flavor-infused liquid is then outlet into the liquid container for providing a contained beverage for consumption.

Disclosed is a capsule for the preparation of a beverage in a beverage machine by feeding liquid into the capsule and extracting a beverage out of the capsule. The capsule comprises containment walls forming an interior cavity containing a beverage precursor for mixing with the liquid in the cavity, wherein the beverage precursor comprises a layer of compressed coffee precursor and a layer comprising a further substance, wherein the layer of compressed coffee precursor is more compressed than the layer comprising the further substance. A beverage preparation capsule comprising a capsule body having a beverage preparation ingredient hermetically sealed therein, wherein a beverage outlet region of said capsule includes front and back sheets of air- and water-impermeable flexible film material arranged in face-to-face relationship along an edge, a folded strip of flexible film material in the form of a gusset extending inwardly from said edge, wherein at least a central region of said strip is provided with a plurality of perforations or a zone of weakness.
