An automated biological or chemical sample processing system includes a dock frame and at least one dock frame module. The dock frame includes at least one docking interface that operably couples and interfaces the dock frame with laboratory equipment. The dock frame defines a spine structure of the system alongside which a variable number of laboratory equipment are arrayed. The dock frame extends longitudinally and has a variable elongated configuration and longitudinal length. The at least one dock frame module includes the docking interface, where each module is interchangeable with another module, and has control features with a predetermined relationship to a reference datum of the dock frame module and with a reference datum of the dock frame so that the at least one dock frame module is interchangeably coupled in linear configuration with at least the other dock frame module to select the variable elongated configuration and longitudinal length.

A high density manufacturing cell or carousel for optimizing floor space usage to reduce equipment footprint and material travel path is disclosed. The carousel allows processing and transferring of products to be concurrently performed, minimising non-productive time. The manufacturing cell or carousel comprises:

(a) a plurality of rotary platforms having one end being attached to a rotatable shaft positioned in the middle of the cell and being rotatable about the central axis thereof;

(b) a plurality of vertical moving platforms being mounted substantially perpendicularly to an external cylindrical housing, wherein the cylindrical housing can be raised upwards and downwards;

(c) a vertical walking beam located next to the cylindrical housing of the manufacturing cell which is a vertical beam having at a number of arms one less than the number of rotary platforms, to pick up and place products for processing and transferring products between platforms of the carousel;

(d) A load gripper and a unload gripper mounted to independent robots, to load products into the carousel for processing and to unload processed products from the rotary platform and transferring to a conveyor positioned next to the walking beam.

Each guiderail has an upper track and a lower track, and first and second connecting tracks that connect the upper track to the lower track at first and second ends of the storage module, respectively. The module has a plurality of inventory carriers that are supported between the first and second guiderails, are arranged end-to-end along the upper and lower tracks along a longitudinal direction, and are elongate along the lateral direction. The module can also have a plurality of storage containers carried by each inventory carrier in a side-by-side relation along the lateral direction, where the plurality of storage containers carry a plurality of inventory items.

The module can also have a plurality of storage containers carried by each inventory carrier in a side-by-side relation along the lateral direction, where the plurality of storage containers carry a plurality of inventory items.
