The method includes providing a vacuum pump in the ultra-violet food sterilization device; detecting that a food-item container is placed inside the ultra-violet food sterilization device. The food-item container is a material that is transparent to UV light. The food-item container includes a vacuum-pump receptacle. The method includes turning on a UV light lamp for a specified period of time. With a vacuum pump, the method generates a specified partial vacuum within the food-item container.
