Medium transport device, recording device, and recording method
A transport device includes a transport roller configured to transport a roll paper, a winding unit configured to wind the roll paper transported, a tension applying unit configured to apply tension to the medium between the transport roller and the winding unit, and a control unit configured to control the tension applying unit. The control unit is configured to control the tension applying unit to maintain a state where the tension is released, at least during an acceleration period of rotation of the transport roller within a period in which the transport roller applies a transporting force to the roll paper.
Medium transport device, recording device, and medium transport method
A medium transport device includes a transport unit configured to transport a medium in a transport direction, a winding unit configured to wind the medium, a tension applying unit configured to apply a tension to the medium between the transport unit and the winding unit, a drive unit configured to drive the tension applying unit, and a controller configured to control the drive unit, in which the controller is configured to control the drive unit such that an application of the tension by the tension applying unit is released at a time when a subsequent transport operation by the transport unit is started after a termination of an winding operation of the medium by the winding unit.
DRYER ROLLERS OF A PRINT SYSTEM WITH INCREASING CONTACT AREA
Systems and methods for dryer rollers of a print system with increasing wrap angles. In one embodiment a dryer includes a turning device configured to rotate about an axis, and to guide a web of print media. The dryer also includes rollers configured to transport the web from an entrance of the dryer to the turning device. The rollers include a series of three or more rollers positioned in the dryer to consecutively increase an amount of contact area with the web as the web travels toward the turning device.

SHEET CONVEYOR AND IMAGE FORMING SYSTEM
A sheet conveyor includes: a holder that detachably holds a sheet roll; a rotation measuring device that measures a rotation amount of the sheet roll; a conveyance roller that conveys a sheet pulled out from the sheet roll held by the holder; a tensioner that is provided between the holder and the conveyance roller and that contacts with the sheet pulled out from the sheet roll toward the conveyance roller; a position detector that detects a position of the tensioner; a motor that generates driving force for rotating the conveyance roller; and a controller that controls the motor. The controller estimates a diameter of the sheet roll based on a conveyance amount of the sheet caused by rotation of the conveyance roller, a rotation amount of the sheet roll measured by the rotation measuring device, and a position of the tensioner detected by the position detector.
SUBSTRATE SELECTION METHODS
A printing system includes a feeding mechanism adapted to feed substrate from a substrate roll to a print zone, the feeding mechanism including a roller with an associated encoder configured to provide an encoder signal. A printhead is located in the print zone, and a controller configured to receive the encoder signal from the encoder, and to correlate the encoder signal to a substrate type.

Printing apparatus and printing method
In a printing apparatus, a controller is configured to control a printing unit such that printing is started after a transport distance of the substrate reaches a pre-discharge transport distance, in which the pre-discharge transport distance is set to a value not less than a first longest distance, provided that a transport distance in a condition in which the transport distance is a longest distance among conditions 1, 2, and 3 provided below is the first longest distance. Condition 1: a transport distance until a region of the substrate that was nipped between a front driving roller and a nip roller passes through a printing head disposed most downstream in a transport path of the substrate, Condition 2: a transport distance until a transport speed of the substrate becomes constant, and Condition 3: a transport distance until tension of the substrate being transported becomes stable.

SHEET MANUFACTURING METHOD AND PROCESSING DEVICE
A sheet manufacturing method includes a conveying step of conveying a base material sheet; and a processing step of rotating a pair of processing rolls to sandwich a conveyance path on which the base material sheet is conveyed, wherein irregular portions along respective outer peripheral faces of the processing rolls engage with each other with a clearance to stretch the base material sheet when the base material sheet passes between the processing rolls. In the conveying step, the base material sheet is conveyed such that the base material sheet contacts along the outer peripheral face of one of the processing rolls immediately prior to passing between the processing rolls; and the tension in the conveyance direction applied to the base material sheet immediately prior to reaching the outer peripheral face of the one of the processing rolls is less than 10% of a breaking load of the base material sheet.
