The system has a web feeding system having a plurality of pairs of levers for providing different amounts of pinch force to the web during the printing and cutting processes so as to retain the media in a substantially flat and stationary position for printing as well as cutting.

During correction of the inclination of the medium by the inclination corrector, the medium transporter is moved to the non-nipping position.

The holder rotatably supports the second roller. The driving unit moves the holder and biases the holder toward the first roller.

The detector detects a size of the transported sheet. The releasing unit releases the nip of one or more of the pairs of transport rollers outside a transport region of the sheet based on the size of the sheet detected by the detector.

The present invention provides an adaptive control system to control a plant using direct output feedback in which a function of the full plant state, as opposed to estimates thereof, is used for feedback control of the plant. The adaptive control system of this invention is therefore highly useful in the control of plants, particularly plants for controlling the physical properties of rolls of web material and more particularly a calendering apparatus. Accordingly, in a particularly preferred embodiment the adaptive control system of this invention controls loading of a calender apparatus, such as a pair of opposed rolls forming a calendering stack, based upon the physical properties of a previously processed web.
