A sheet handling apparatus includes: a transport path along which a sheet is transported; a first transport member disposed on one side of the transport path; and a second transport member disposed opposed to the first transport member with the transport path interposed therebetween. The first transport member and the second transport member are driven to rotate. The sheet is transported by the first transport member rotating with an outer peripheral surface thereof being in contact with a first face of the sheet, and by the second transport member rotating in a direction opposite to a rotation direction of the first transport member, with an outer peripheral surface thereof being in contact with a second face of the sheet different from the first face.

A mechanism for an ADF having upper and lower trays, a base connecting the trays, and a cover pivotally connected to the upper tray includes a housing provided within the base and movable relative thereto. A transmission has a gripping position for transporting paper along a path from the upper tray to the lower tray and a release position allowing a paper jam along the path to be remedied. The cover is pivotable between a first condition maintaining the transmission in the gripping position and a second condition allowing the housing to move relative to the trays to place the transmission in the release position.

A conveying device includes a first guide section, a second guide section, and an urging section. The second guide section has a guide center portion and pivots about the guide center portion. The second guide section is pivotable between a guide position and a separation position. The guide position is a position in which the second guide section is located when a conveyance path of a sheet is formed between the second guide section and the first guide section. When the second guide section is in the guide position, the urging section urges the second guide section in a first pivot direction.

An image reading device includes: a supply tray including a movable plate which moves from a first position to a second position according to a decrease in the number of sheet to be supported by a supply tray; a discharge guide including a discharge opening for discharging the sheet conveyed by a conveyance guide to a discharge tray, and moves from a third position to a fourth position according to the decrease in the number of the sheets to be supported by the supply tray; a first drive source and a first drive train that transmits a drive force from the first drive source to a discharge roller. The discharge roller discharges a sheet through a discharge opening by receiving the drive force from the first drive source.

In the first mode, the control unit controls the driving source such that the rotary feeding member starts to move toward the first position based on an elapse of a first time since the detection portion detected a leading edge of the sheet, and position the rotary feeding member at the first position when a trailing edge of the sheet passes through the separation nip. In the second mode, the control unit controls the driving source such that the rotary feeding member starts to move toward the first position based on an elapse of a second time longer than the first time since the detection portion detected the leading edge of the sheet, and position the rotary feeding member at a position separated more from the stacking portion than the first position when the trailing edge of the sheet passes through the separation nip.

A paper sheet accumulating device includes an accumulating part in which paper sheets are accumulated, an impeller that sends the paper sheets to the accumulating part, and a support mechanism that supports the impeller. The support mechanism includes a first rotation shaft that supports the impeller rotatable, a support member provided with the first rotation shaft, a second rotation shaft that supports the support member rotatable in a direction of the support member moving toward and away from the accumulating part, and a biasing member that biases the support member in a direction of the impeller moving toward the paper sheets accumulated in the accumulating part.

A media registration system including an accumulation region and a transport track to receive and transport each media sheet of a series of media sheets forming a media job in a transport direction from an intake end to a registration end proximate to the accumulation region, and to stack the media sheets of the media job in the accumulation region to form a job stack. A translator adjusts a position of the registration end of the transport track in a direction lateral to the transport direction for each sheet to align edges of each sheet of the job stack in the lateral direction. A media sensor indicates a position of each sheet along the media path to facilitate a controller to determine an accumulation status of the job stack.

A curl straightening device includes an endless belt, a curl straightening roller, a nip width adjusting mechanism, and a guide member. The curl straightening roller makes pressure contact with an outer peripheral surface of the endless belt, forming a nip portion, and straightens curl of the sheet which passes through the nip portion. The nip width adjusting mechanism moves the curl straightening roller in a direction away from or close to the endless belt so as to change a nip width. The mechanism includes a supporting holder of the curl straightening roller, and a rotationally moving portion that rotationally moves the roller supporting holder for moving the curl straightening roller. The guide member includes a pair of hanging members that are hung from both ends of the curl straightening roller so as to keep the guide member in constant position and posture relative to the curl straightening roller.

A transport device includes a first rotary part that rotates; a second rotary part that contacts the first rotary part, that forms a pinch region where an object to be transported is pinched between the second rotary part and the first rotary part, and that rotates together with the first rotary part; and a positioning mechanism that positions the second rotary part with respect to the first rotary part. The positioning mechanism includes a swing part that supports one end portion side of the second rotary part, that is supported at one end portion side of the first rotary part, and that is swingable around a rotation center of the first rotary part; and a fixing section that fixes the swing part.

A sheet feeding device includes a pickup roller, a feed roller, a retard roller, a conveyance rollers pair. The pickup roller contacts a sheet at a first contact point in a pickup position and rotates to convey the sheet in a predetermined conveyance direction. The feed roller is disposed on a downstream side of the pickup roller in the conveyance direction. The retard roller contacts the feed roller at a second contact point and conveys the sheet while separating the sheet. The conveyance rollers pair contacts each other at a third contact point and conveys the sheet passing through the second contact point to a conveyance path. The first contact point, the second contact point and the third contact point are disposed on a linear line in the conveyance direction, when viewed from axial directions of the rollers.
