A metal honeycomb substrate includes a tubular body, a flat plate, and a wavy plate. The tubular body has a receiving portion. The wavy plate is stacked with the flat plate to form a spiral structure received in the receiving portion. The wavy plate has a wavy-shaped cross section and includes a second region and a continuous region connected to the second region. The wavy-shaped cross section includes peak portions and valley portions. The wavy plate has a solder region overlapping at least one portion of at least one of the second region and the continuous region. Solders are on outer sides of the peak portions and outer sides of the valley portions which are in the solder region. A ratio of an area of the solder region to an area of the wavy plate is in a range between substantially 20% and substantially 66%.

A catalyst-coated, plugged honeycomb body having a honeycomb structure with a matrix of porous walls forming a plurality of channels, at least some of the plurality of channels being plugged to form inlet channels and outlet channels. At least some of the porous walls are filtration walls and at least some of the porous walls are non-filtration walls. A catalyst is preferentially disposed on the non-filtration walls, wherein the catalyst being preferentially disposed comprises CR<0.2 wherein CR is a coating ratio defined as an average percent loading of a washcoat containing the catalyst on and within the filtration walls divided by an average percent loading of the washcoat containing the catalyst on and within the non-filtration walls. Methods and apparatus configured to preferentially apply a catalyst-containing slurry to the non-filtration walls are provided, as are other aspects.

Each communicating pore has a surface opening on the gas-inflow-side surface and a plurality of portions, each portion having a diameter being reduced and then increased from the surface opening, one of the portions, whose diameter is the smallest, being defined as an inlet neck portion. As viewed in cross section in a thickness direction of the partition wall, the surface opening of each communication pore has a diameter defined as a surface opening diameter, the inlet neck portion of each communication pore has a diameter defined as an inlet neck diameter. The inlet neck diameter is smaller than the surface opening diameter, and an average value of the inlet neck diameters is 15 μm or less. A surface opening ratio of the communicating pores in plan view of the gas-inflow-side partition wall surface is 40% or more.

The honeycomb filter of the present invention comprises a ceramic honeycomb substrate formed from a porous body of sintered ceramic particles, and a filter layer formed on the surface of the cell walls, wherein a portion of the filter layer penetrates from the surface of the cell walls into pores formed by the ceramic particles to form inter-particle filtration bodies, these inter-particle filtration bodies are formed from a plurality of spherical ceramic particles and crosslinking bodies which bind the spherical ceramic particles to each other, and the spherical ceramic particles and the crosslinking bodies form a three-dimensional network structure.

The highly porous layer has a porosity greater than 90%, and has an average thickness of greater than or equal to 0.5 μm and less than or equal to 10 μm. A method of making a honeycomb body includes depositing a layer precursor on a ceramic honeycomb body and binding the layer precursor to the ceramic honeycomb body to form the highly porous layer.

A plugged honeycomb structure includes a tubular honeycomb structure body having partition walls including a porous partition wall base material defining a plurality of cells which become through channels for a fluid and extend from a first end face to a second end face, and a porous trapping layer disposed on the surface of the partition wall base material; and plugging portions disposed in open ends of predetermined cells in the first end face and open ends of residual cells in the second end face, and the partition wall base material is constituted of a porous body including α-Al.sub.2O.sub.3 as a main phase and further including aluminum titanate and glass.

A honeycomb structure includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure body including porous partition walls defining and forming a plurality of cells which extend from an inflow end face to an outflow end face, and a porous outer wall surrounding the partition walls, a porous supporting bulge disposed to extend out from a circumference of the outer wall so that at least a part of the outer wall is exposed, and plugging portions arranged in open ends of the cells, and the supporting bulge has support portions and a side wall portion, and the partition walls and the outer wall of the honeycomb structure body and the support portions and the side wall portion of the supporting bulge are all formed monolithically by formation of a ceramic raw material.
