Cigarettes are provided which contain a filtering system and flavorants encapsulated with polyvinyl acetate, wherein deactivation of a sorbent by the flavorant is reduced through the encapsulation of the flavorant within the polyvinyl acetate. A preferred flavorant is menthol. The encapsulated flavorants are prepared by mixing at least one flavorant with polyvinyl acetate and a solvent, such as ethanol, and forming the encapsulated flavorants. Methods of making cigarettes and smoking the articles are also provided.

Disclosed are controlled release particles, each controlled release particle of which includes: (a) a core including at least one hydrophobic active material and an emulsifier which is an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible lecithin emulsifier; and (b) a wall at least partially surrounding the core and including an acid insoluble polymer, a colloidal silica, a water insoluble divalent salt, a film forming polymer, and optionally a powder flow aid, wherein the controlled release particle is configured to retain the at least one hydrophobic active material when exposed to an acidic aqueous solution with a pH less than 6, and to release the at least one hydrophobic active material when exposed to a basic aqueous solution with a pH greater than 7. A method for preparing the particles and compositions containing the particles are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a process to prepare a free-flowing salt product comprising sodium chloride (NaCl) and/or potassium chloride (KCl), wherein the salt product has a particle size of from 50 m to 1000 m, which process comprises the steps of (a) processing a source of pure NaCl, pure KCl, or mixture of salts, to form particles with an average size of less than 100 micrometer; (b) subsequently, compacting the particles from step a) using a pressure of from 40 to 400 MPa; and optionally, crushing the thus obtained particles; and (c) subsequently, absorbing one or more agents into the salt particles, characterized in that no agent is added in or during steps a) and b) or between steps a) and b).
