The cutting device is transferrable by a driving force from a rest position into an extended position. The film is severable by the cutting device in the extended position. The cutting device is connected to a housing surrounding the cutting device via a return mechanism. The return mechanism is activatable upon the cutting device being transferred from the rest position into the extended position. A return force in a direction of the rest position is exertable by the return mechanism in the activated state on the cutting device in its extended position, the force being greater than a return resistance of the cutting device in its extended state by which the cutting device is held in the extended state without action of the driving force.

The feed spool is configured to carry a tape roll of tackifier tape that includes a tackifier material and a backing material, and the uptake spool is configured to carry a backing material roll of the backing material. The tape layup system further includes a torque transmission system configured to convey a torque from the feed spool to the uptake spool. The tape layup system is configured such that conveying a torque from the feed spool to the uptake spool operates to draw the backing material onto the backing material roll. A method of operating a tape layup system includes generating tension in a tackifier tape to rotate a feed spool and consequently rotating an uptake spool to draw a backing material onto a backing material roll.

The upper guide unit is configured such that a gap between the upper guide unit and the lower guide unit widens in accordance with a thickness of the booklet to allow the booklet to pass through the gap.

The cutting apparatus includes an actuator that is connected to the blade via a primary shaft. The actuator is also connected to the table via both a secondary shaft and a cam assembly. Rotation of the actuator causes the primary shaft to continuously reciprocate the blade in upward and downward directions. Rotation of the actuator also causes intermittent movement of the table that includes both translation of the table to index the belt relative to the blade, and pivoting of the table to change an angle of the belt relative to the blade.
