Joining and reinforcing a composite bumper beam and a composite crush can for a vehicle

A front bumper beam and crush can (FBCC) system is provided for a vehicle. A bumper beam has an interior surface with a plurality of ribs extending therefrom. The ribs and the interior surface are made of a chopped fiber composite and cooperate to engage a crush can. The chopped fiber composite reinforces the engaging surfaces of the crush can and the interior surface of the bumper beam. The crush can has a tubular body made of a continuous fiber composite. The crush can has outwardly-extending flanges at an end spaced away from the bumper beam. The flanges are at least partially provided with a layer of chopped fiber composite to reinforce a joint between the outwardly-extending flange and the vehicle frame.

Polymeric shock absorbing element for a vehicle including a substantially honeycomb structure having a plurality of channels which has a lateral external surface extending from a first open frontal end to a second open rear end, the shock absorbing element insertable and securable within an internal lateral cavity of a chassis of said vehicle, the internal lateral cavity being defined by at least two metallic plates. The lateral external surface includes at least one substantially planar face positioned on one side of the polymeric shock absorbing element and the additionally includes at least one metallic fixing element having a central portion which in turn includes a first central wall which is made integral with a corresponding substantially planar face of the lateral external surface, the at least one metallic fixing element additionally includes a plurality of side stiffeners which are weldable or made integral with the two metallic sheets.

Front bumper

A front bumper includes a bumper body, a bumper inner, and a first electronic device. The bumper body is exposed to the outside of the vehicle. The bumper inner is located inside the bumper body and configured to fix the bumper body to a body of the vehicle. The first electronic device is located between the bumper body and the bumper inner. The bumper inner includes an inner body facing at least a part of the first electronic device in a first direction, and at least one columnar portion located adjacent to first the electronic device in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, and extending in the first direction from the inner body toward the bumper body. The length in the first direction of the at least one columnar portion is greater than the length in the first direction of the first electronic device.

ENERGY-ABSORBING DEVICE

An energy-absorbing device for a vehicle is disclosed. The energy-absorbing device includes a main direction of elongation, an external face intended to receive an impact, a core made of an energy-absorbing material, and a plastic structure that forms a one-piece entity with the core. The core is of a corrugated shape with a succession of crests in a direction of extension parallel to the main direction of elongation. The plastic structure includes means of attaching the energy-absorbing device to an element of a vehicle which is to be protected. The external face is formed at least in part by crests of the corrugated shape of the core.
