An airbag module including a first casing enclosing a first gas space, a first inflator and a control device for controlling ventilation of the first gas space or the shape of the first casing. The control device includes a second casing (42) enclosing a second gas space and a gas source. The second gas space is bordered by a permanent edge connection, and further includes a control element such as a strap (60), whose first end is connected to the first casing and whose second end is sewn to the second casing (42) by a tear seam (49), and is decoupled from the second casing (42) upon filling of the second gas space. The tear seam (49) touches or intersects the edge connection at two points so that the tear seam divides the second gas space into two regions (43a, 43b).

The leading end of the coupling member is coupled with an opening/closing control device. The flap main body closes off the exhaust hole from an inner peripheral face side of the airbag. A width on the base portion side is set to be greater than a width of the exhaust hole. Whole of the base portion side is joined to the peripheral edge of the exhaust hole in the airbag. The flap main body covers the exhaust hole in a region between straight lines that connect one end each of a joint region on the base portion and a region on the leading end to which the coupling member is caused to be coupled.

An airbag device includes an airbag, a blocking member that can adjust an exhaust hole of the airbag to a blocked state and an opened state, a coupling member, and a holding and releasing unit, which maintains a state of blocking the exhaust hole by holding the coupling member. When the holding and releasing unit releases the holding of the coupling member, the blocking member inverts in such a way as to be fed out from an inner peripheral face side of the airbag to an outer peripheral face side through the exhaust hole owing to being pressed by inflating gas, and causes inflating gas to be discharged from a through hole formed between leading end regions of outer peripheral edges of a first panel portion and a second panel portion in the blocking member and a communication hole communicating with the exhaust hole.

Active bolster vent distribution for stress and load management

An active bolster mounts at an interior trim surface of a passenger compartment in an automotive vehicle. A plastic-molded front wall deploys in a deployment direction toward a passenger in the passenger compartment. A plastic-molded bladder member is joined along an outer perimeter with the front wall by a hot weld seam to form an inflatable bladder. The bladder member includes at least one substantially circumferential pleated baffle. An inflator couples an inflation gas into the inflatable bladder in response to a crash event of the vehicle. The pleated baffle forms a plurality of at least five vent openings including at least one stress relief vent juxtaposed to a peak stress region of the hot weld seam and a plurality of tuning vents which are concentrated at a lowest restraint-force region of the inflatable bladder.

An apparatus for helping to protect a vehicle occupant includes an airbag having primary and secondary chambers fluidly connected by a first passive vent and an active vent having an open condition and a closed condition. The primary chamber has a stored condition and a deployed condition to cover a portion of the vehicle. An interior panel divides the primary chamber into upper and lower inflatable volumes and includes a second passive vent fluidly connecting the upper and lower inflatable volumes. The secondary chamber has a stored condition and a deployed condition to cover portions of the vehicle left uncovered by the primary chamber. An inflator is actuatable to provide inflation fluid to the primary chamber. The active vent is controllable to prevent fluid communication between the primary and secondary chambers in response to occupant penetration into the primary chamber and controllable to allow fluid communication between the primary and secondary chambers in response to occupant penetration into the secondary chamber. The second passive vent automatically closes to prevent fluid flow from the lower inflatable volume to the upper inflatable volume in response to occupant penetration into the secondary chamber.
