Steering column device

A support bracket is arranged inside a slit of an outer column and joined to the inner column so as to be able to detach due to an impact load applied to the inner column at the time of a secondary collision. A base portion of an impact absorbing member is attached to the inner column so as to displace together with the inner column when the inner column displaces toward the front, and a folded portion of the impact absorbing member is made to face a jerking portion of the support bracket in the front-rear direction.

A steering device includes: an inner tube including a steering wheel; a column housing that houses the tube retractably along an axis; a drive mechanism attached to the column housing in such a way as to cause the tube to perform a retraction operation via a drive member that reciprocates along the axis, a first impact absorption member that is provided on one of the drive member and the tube, and includes a deformation portion; and an action member that is provided on another of the drive member and the tube, and plastically deforms the deformation portion. The drive member, the first impact absorption member, and the action member are fixed by a single fixing member. When a predetermined pushing load acts on the tube, fixing between the first impact absorption member and the action member is released.

Steering assemblies

A collapsible steering column assembly includes a shroud comprising an outer tube that supports a steering wheel through a bearing and an inner tube that is fixed to a part of the vehicle, the column assembly being able to collapse telescopically by the outer tube moving over the inner tube, the assembly further including an energy absorbing strap that is fixed to the inner tube and a plough which is fixed to the outer tube, whereby in use the assembly is so arranged that upon a telescopic collapse the relative movement between the inner tube and the outer tube forces a part of the plough through the strap to progressively peel away a part of the strap from the remainder of the strap.

Motor-adjustable steering column for a motor vehicle

A motor-adjustable steering column for a motor vehicle has an outer casing which is held by a support unit that is attachable to a vehicle body. An actuator unit is received in the outer casing to adjust in the longitudinal direction. A steering spindle is coaxially and rotatably mounted in a casing tube in the actuator unit. An adjustment drive and an energy absorbing installation are disposed between the outer casing and the actuator unit. The adjustment drive has a spindle mechanism with a threaded spindle which is rotatably drivable by an electric servomotor engaged in a spindle nut. The energy absorbing installation has at least one energy absorbing element at least indirectly disposed between the spindle nut and the actuator unit. The spindle nut or the threaded spindle has at least one forming element which operatively engages with the energy absorbing element and is plastically deformable.

A steering column system includes: a rotatable steering shaft that has a proximal end attached to a steering wheel and is configured to transfer rotational input at the steering wheel to a steering rack of the vehicle; a stationary driver-side airbag (DAB) shaft that is mounted in the vehicle and extends along the steering shaft; and a DAB module that contains an airbag and is fixedly mounted to a proximal end of the DAB shaft within a region of the steering wheel. The steering wheel and the steering shaft are configured to rotate independently of the DAB module and the DAB shaft, respectively.

DUAL DIRECTION LOCKING MECHANISM FOR TELESCOPING STEERING COLUMN

A locking mechanism for a telescoping steering column includes an energy absorption strap having a plurality of teeth disposed therealong. Also included is a clamp bolt rotatably driven by an adjustment lever. Further included is an actuator body coupled to the clamp bolt and rotated therewith. Yet further included is a first lock cam coupled to the actuator body and engageable with the teeth of the energy absorption strap to lock the telescoping steering column in a first direction. Also included is a second lock cam coupled to the actuator body and engageable with the teeth of the energy absorption strap to lock the telescoping steering column in a second direction different than the first direction.

A steer-by-wire steering system for a motor vehicle is presented, having a steering means to be held by the driver, a bearing device and an electric steering means actuator. The bearing device has a first sleeve element and a second sleeve element, which are connected to one another to be telescopic along an axial direction of the sleeve elements. The bearing device has a fastening element, which is fixedly connectable to a body of the motor vehicle, wherein the second sleeve element is fixedly mounted on the actuating element and wherein the steering means and the steering means actuator are mounted on the first sleeve element such that they are immovable in relation to the first sleeve element in the axial direction.

STEERING COLUMN TELESCOPE ASSEMBLY AND ENERGY ABSORPTION DEVICE

An assembly for a steering column assembly including an engagement plate and a telescope plate at least partially disposed within the engagement plate. The engagement plate may be adapted to be located between a column tube of a steering column assembly and the telescope plate. The engagement plate and the telescope plate have one or more features for engaging with or contacting each other to provide energy absorption during an impact exceeding a threshold load. These features may include one or more projections or protrusions, one or more slots, one or more ribs, or a combination.
