A power steering system for a motor vehicle, having a steering column integrating an upper shaft and an intermediate shaft rotatably linked and movable in translation relative to one another, an upper tube and a lower tube rotatably linked and movable in translation relative to one another, the upper shaft being movable in rotation and linked in translation within the upper tube, and an assist module integrating an output shaft linked in rotation with the intermediate shaft via a torsion bar, a reducer having a worm screw driven by an assist motor and which meshes on a worm wheel linked to the output shaft; and an angle measuring device having an inductive sensor carried by an annular support having a central orifice dimensioned so as to let the upper tube pass, a lower target securely mounted around the output shaft and an upper target.

Steering Column Retraction Initiator

A handwheel actuator for a steer by wire system of a vehicle may include a column for operably coupling a handwheel to other components of the steer by wire system and a feedback actuator operably coupled to the column to provide tactile feedback to the operator responsive to movement of the handwheel. The column may include a lower column portion and an upper column portion that are movable relative to each other to alternately retract the handwheel away from an operator seated in the vehicle or extend the handwheel toward the operator. The column may further include a frictional engagement assembly and a time-specific release initiator. The frictional engagement assembly may be engaged to fix the lower column portion relative to the upper column portion at a selected distance from the operator, and disengaged to enable movement of the upper column portion relative to the lower column portion. The time-specific release initiator may be actuated by an electrical trigger signal to cause the lower column portion and the upper column portion to be disengaged a selected time after a triggering event.

Energy absorbing assembly for an adjustable steering column

An axially adjustable steering column including a first jacket and a second jacket that is axially movable with respect to the first jacket. The second jacket includes a window and the first jacket includes a connector opening. An energy absorbing assembly includes a lock cam that is located in the window and connected to the second jacket and a strap body that is connected to the first jacket with a fastener extending through the strap body and the connector opening. The connector opening includes a ramp for ejecting the fastener from engagement with the first jacket.

Steering column assembly

A collapsible steering column assembly is disclosed, which comprises a collapsible steering column shroud that supports a collapsible steering shaft. The steering shaft has a first end for connection to a steering wheel of a vehicle a mounting bracket that supports the steering column shroud relative to the vehicle. The mounting bracket comprises a fixed portion secured to a fixed part of a vehicle body and a releasable portion secured to the steering shaft. The releasable portion is also secured to the fixed portion of the mounting bracket by one or more frangible connectors. The connectors are adapted to break in the event of a crash to permit the releasable portion and the steering shaft to move relative to the fixed portion. The fixed portion includes a first anvil which has a rounded nose that faces towards the steering wheel, and a guide part which is offset from the first anvil in a direction away from the steering wheel. The guide part has a surface that is vertically offset from an adjacent surface of the fixed portion of the mounting bracket to define a space bounded by the surface of the guide part. The adjacent surface of the fixed part of the mounting bracket defines a convoluted path. An energy absorption strap has a first region fixed to at least one of the steering column shroud and the releasable portion and from which the energy absorption strap extends along a path that first loops around the first anvil and then passes along the convoluted path.
