Sheet feeding apparatus and image forming apparatus

A sheet feeding apparatus includes a stacking portion, a lifting portion, a feeding portion, and a control portion. The sheet feeding apparatus further includes a first height detecting portion configured to output a signal corresponding to a position in a height direction of the topmost sheet of sheets stacked on the stacking portion, a sheet presence detecting portion configured to output a signal corresponding to presence or absence of the sheets stacked on the stacking portion, and a second height detecting portion configured to output a signal corresponding to a position in a height direction of the stacking portion. The control portion performs control for sheet feeding operation using the signal from the sheet presence detecting portion if the position of the stacking portion is above a predetermined height based on the signal from the second height detecting portion and, if the position of the stacking portion is below the predetermined height, the control portion performs control for sheet feeding operation not using the sheet presence detecting portion.

Paper discharge device

When a face of a paper sheet to be discharged on which an image is formed faces downward, a paper discharge device divides an image region of image data on the paper sheet to be discharged into areas along a discharge direction, detects an area in which maximum image density for each divided area is higher than or equal to a specified threshold, and controls a discharge angle so that the detected area does not come into contact with a stacked paper sheet until the paper sheet to be discharged has been discharged from a discharge roller.

Self-setting exit roll assembly

Devices have a movable roller, a fixed-position roller contacting the movable roller to form an exit nip transporting planar media, biasing members operatively connected to the movable roller, and adjusters contacting the movable roller. Such devices are connectable to a first machine or a second machine. Contact areas of the first machine hold the adjusters in a first position to position the movable roller in a position resulting in the exit nip transporting the planar media in a first exit direction. The second machine instead has void areas positioned to allow movement of the adjusters to position the movable roller in a position resulting in the exit nip transporting the planar media in a second exit direction different from the first exit direction.

A document feeder for a printer may include an upper part and/or a lower part. The upper part may include a feeding roller arrangement configured to engage with an upper face of a document. The lower part may include a retaining surface. The lower part may further include a sliding element which, in at least an operation mode of the document feeder, may have a portion that projects with respect to the retaining surface for supporting a lower face of the document in such a way that at least a portion of the document is raised with respect to the retaining surface.
