Detecting a continuous level of paper in a paper supply providing paper for a printing device. A length of the paper supply includes applied indicia, with the indicia extending contiguously across the length of the paper supply. When a paper section is dispensed, the position of the indicia on the dispensed portion of paper is determined, with the position reflecting a level pertaining to the paper supply remaining or dispensed.

A system and method of detecting the presence of metallic objects in media to be conveyed in a medium transport system is disclosed. One or more metal detectors are included in the medium transport system to detect the presence of metal in the medium being transported. Signals from the metal detectors are sent to a system processor, which analyzes the signals, and produces proximity, duration, and/or intensity values therefrom. One or more microphones may also be included which detect the sound created as the medium is being transported. The processor computes sound values from the microphone signals, and analyzes the computed sound values along with the proximity, duration, and/or intensity values in order determine if the conveyance of the medium along the transport path should be stopped due to the presence of metal in the media or a jam occurring within the medium transport path.

A system and method of detecting the presence of metallic objects in media to be conveyed in a medium transport system is disclosed. A method for processing a sheet at a predetermined position on the sheet in a processing part, includes: placing a plurality of the sheets in a placement part; reading, by a first reader disposed in the placement part, information printed in a predetermined area on the sheet spaced apart from a trailing edge of the sheet by at least a first length, the first length being the length in a plan view from a disposed position of a detector to a disposed position of a contact member with which leading edges of the sheets placed in the placement part come into contact, the detector detecting the sheet on a conveyance path for the sheet extending from the placement part to the processing part; and processing the sheet based on the information read by the first reader.

According to one embodiment, there is provided an image forming apparatus including a conveyance unit, a detection unit, an image forming unit, and a control unit. The conveyance unit is configured to convey a print medium to which a wireless tag is attached and on which wireless tag position information indicating a position of the wireless tag is formed. The detection unit is configured to detect the wireless tag position information formed on the print medium. The image forming unit is configured to form an image on the print medium. The control unit is configured to control the conveyance unit and the image forming unit based on the wireless tag position information detected by the detection unit.
